  • If you leverage all the workarounds and utilities available, the best you can get is still a mostly senile chatbot. It’ll constantly forget stuff and get details wrong, but I suppose if you’re deep into psychosis, then you’d pass that off as just being ‘a little forgetful’.

The absolute best ones available still are basically the same as zoning out in a meeting and then trying to respond when asked a question by wild guessing and a handful of context clues. You might get lucky and say something reasonable a few times, but the longer it goes on the more apparent it is that you haven’t been paying attention at all.

  • I feel like Linux works for hardcore users and extremely casual users, but it doesn’t work that great for medium savvy users.

Like sure if I’m barely using the computer for anything other than a web browser then it’ll work fine.

And if I’m willing to do a whole lot of research I can also make it work for power user setups (at an even better outcome than Windows).

But if I’m just a gamer who’s smart enough to do some modding and run a couple of game servers and maybe some other utilities, but I’m not incredibly tech savvy otherwise? Not a great fit.

Oh good point. For a non-benevolent genie story, I suppose being made a prince of a defunct country would work. He would be a prince, but it wouldn’t be good enough for what he wants to be a prince for (a good match for the princess). Yeah I see your angle now and that makes sense.

If it was impossible he shouldn’t have accepted the wish. Aladdin already gets a wish rejected for not being possible. Fulfilling a wish with something different than what was wished for shouldn’t be a thing.

And what does being a prince of a non-existent country even mean? That’s still not a prince in any capacity (as confirmed by the story). It’s just a scam.

Plus an easy way to accomplish this is just to make Aladdin the lost son of someone. It’s a pretty common trope for royal kids to end up missing and raised as commoners, especially in Disney stories.

  • True. And I’d expect you’d need fewer of these moments for younger people than older ones. Every little bump might be the one that diverts someone to a different path. I know it hasn’t worked well on my older family members, but it was those kind of moments that helped my diverge from my religious upbringing when I was younger.

  • My understanding is that it’s not bad when done correctly, but if they screw up the install it can be a nightmare and a huge safety issue. They screw up the mixture and now you’ve got extremely hard to remove foam stuck to everything that’s going to off gas dangerous chemicals for 20 years. It can go bad enough to completely condemn the home.

  • I’ve found that even if you do this, it doesn’t really alter their behavior. A moment of consensus is never going to be enough.

People need to treat this kind of stuff like breaking someone from a drug addiction or helping someone lose weight. Without addressing the lifestyle factors that drove them down that path, you’ll never get them to actually change.

That’s why the brainwashing is so terrifying. People can fall into it pretty quickly and then it can take years and years to deprogram them.

The Disney genie was also just a scam. Aladdin explicitly wished to be a prince. Not look like a prince or be as rich as a prince or have a parade like a prince. But actually be one.

Instead he’s revealed to be a ‘fake prince’ because the genie half assed his wish.

The fediverse lacks basically all of my niche communities and the ones that exist have zero engagement. I’m basically only on Lemmy at this point for political stuff. Politics anything is a shitshow on Reddit, but seems decent on Lemmy. But that’s just really not enough.

Though to be fair, Reddit’s ‘suggested’ posts feature is I believe destroying niche communities on Reddit these days, so I’m not sure how much longer those will keep working for me either. Moving away from explicit subscriptions and turning your home feed into just a lesser version of /r/all is a good way to ruin most communities over time I think. I feel eventually Reddit will just become Facebook for millennials where your feed is completely divorced from anything you might actually want to see and is entirely an algorithm instead.

I mean steam just had a bunch of games delisted because of draconian porn rules (save the children!)

UK passed an insanely invasive adult content ID law

All of this ‘save the children’ stuff starts with arguments like this. Erode nuance, make the attack on children seem bigger and more menacing. Erase the difference between teens and children, so everything is treated as if it was done to a five year old.

I personally think the loss of nuance is kind of scary. There are massive, continuous attacks on our freedoms in the name of ‘protect the children’.

It’s inaccurate language like this that’s used to justify those changes.

People are acting like this is supposedly undermining the horror of rape, but that’s like saying we only care about rape if it’s happens to a 9 year old. We should be horrified at rape period, no matter the age of the person it happens to.

Treating teenagers and young adults like they’re children isn’t helping anything and is just a cover to push these restrictive laws on us, much like how the pro-life arguments are done in bad faith and just used to further their pro-birth ideals.

  • I mean the difference is that the old RNC deliberately invited the vampire inside, thinking they could control them. They were supposed to be useful idiots to get extra votes. They were wrong and lost control.

The DNC recognizes that if they ever actually gave the people power they’d never get it back. So they’re much more diligent about denying any possible progressive advancement, up to and including damaging their own party to do so.

  • Yeah. There was a post the other day about a CEO that got a 1.2B payout and then gave her staff a first class ticket and $10k in cash. The cost amount to less than 1% of the payout for selling the company that those same staff helped make successful.

And everyone was arguing about how the CEO didn’t have to give anything at all, so complaining about any of it was just being greedy. Totally ignoring the fact that there’s no way the CEO represented 99.5% of the effort to make the company successful.

They don’t even see it as a problem and seem happy with whatever minor crumbs the rich are willing to hand out, totally ignoring that what they’ve been handed is a tiny fraction of what was stolen.
