Oh that was just FSN, an actual filesystem browser for IRIX back in the day. You can install the port FSV if you want to browse your files as if they’re 3D objects on Linux today

Teenage Engineering
In the beginning it screamed at me. Images loaded line by line over minutes. The most novel thing was being able to message my friends, who would make a creaking door-opening sound when they came online, and set “away” messages with in-jokes or vague angsty song lyrics. I was told not to share any personal or private information, which made discussion rooms seem like mysterious masquerade balls. I could find anything about anything if I looked hard enough, and the minutes spent waiting for replies in discussion boards where your only caché was your previous interactions on the board felt like hours.

Huey: “Ruin the party? They love me. These people aren’t worried about us. They’re not worried about anything. They’re rich. No matter what happens, these people just keep applauding.”

marzhall@lemmy.worldto Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Ads when you’re pumping gasEnglish61·22 days agoDo me a favor, when you’ve got a minute, go by a Wawa and grab an Italian hoagie and enjoy it for me? I miss them every day, man. Gas pump ads, shitty gas station hoagies, it’s rough movin across the Sheetz/Wawa line

Y’ever think about how if Jesus died by a guillotine there’d be guillotines everywhere

marzhall@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's your favorite instrument to listen to?5·25 days agoWhen I think of a classical instrument, I think cello - specifically this piece Shadow of Doubt by Yoko Kanno, where it has such a brooding tone and power.
Being a synthesizer nerd, I like those most, but they have such varied tones among them and even on the same synth; 4x Atlantis by Aphex Twin probably captures one of the tones I most love, and the entire “Orphans” piece hits much of the range.

That said I’ve def bookmarked that episode for watching. I lost track of Black MIrror, it’s a bit tough in that it’s so grim that each episode doesn’t really leave you wanting to watch the next one in my experience. But it’s had some bangers.

marzhall@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Samsung teams up with Glance to use your face in AI-generated lock screen adsEnglish561·27 days agoBuddy had the nightmarish idea a while back with all the new generative ai stuff for video chat services injecting ads using the faces/voices of the participants in lieu of payment. Just, regularly-schedule ad breaks in your call where “your friend” suddenly starts talking about how excited they are about Raid: Shadow Legends
marzhall@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why do, relatively, so few of you set an avatar for your profile?13·1 month agoHeck, I was salty when the old site added avatars. I already ignored names and was weirded out by “popular redditors” culture before avatars, and it was annoying to see a logo next to a name coloring my perception of the comment. I’m here to read comments, not to look at avatars
Ayy, recently rewatched that too. Personal headcannon: a better ending would have been a montage of Eva teaching an amnesiac Wall-E all the things he taught her and have him fall in love with those things and her again in the process. Probably more drawn out than “random electric spark magically resets memory” though
Scheiß
Ich habe keine Ahnung
I’ll bite: I powered on my computer. My bios started which started my init process, which started my daemons, which started my login manager (maybe slim), which started my DE (maybe gnome), which I use to go to my browser in order to watch other people stream video games.
I’m dicey on what the browser is being used for - maybe security software? - but I feel like it’s plausible.
I love this. Between the people who didn’t notice it the same way I absolutely would not have, and the people who just say what obviously was intended, this could go forever and drive a couple of people absolutely insane.
