A worthy cause - keep it up!
Quite possibly a luddite.

sab@kbin.socialto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are songs about the music industry that you like?3·1 year agoA fun industry fact: Have A Cigar was sung by Roy Harper, as he happened to be in the studio and the members of Floyd thought he could be a good fit. Roy Harper is perhaps more known in the mainstream through the Zeppelin song Hats Off to (Roy) Harper than through his own recordings, though he’s still alive and active.
Harper didn’t feel like he was appropriately compensated for his work on Have a Cigar, which is ironic considering the overall thematic.

Great song about the difficulties of making a living off music now that everything is available for nothing. Father John Misty recorded a version when he was invited to the Spotify Sessions, which was a nice little fuck you to the people inviting him.

Remember that comments are not federated to/from threads yet. If I understood correctly, likes are federated.

Why would the Star Wars wiki federate edits with the Startrek wiki? On which page of the wiki would this make sense?
I just don’t get it.
sab@kbin.socialto Fediverse@lemmy.world•Announcing Ibis, the federated Wikipedia Alternative1096·1 year agoI’m not sure I see the benefit of this. The point that Wikipedia might eventually become corrupted is made moot by the permissive licensing of the information there. The main challenge of the Wiki format is with fact checking and ensuring quality, which is only made more complicated by having a federated platform.
ActivityPub is great for creating the social web. The added benefit of ActivityPub for non-social services is not obvious to me at all.
That said, it’s a cool proof of concept, and I’m sure it can be useful for certain types of federated content management - I just don’t see how it could ever make sense as a Wikipedia alternative.
sab@kbin.socialto General Discussion@lemmy.world•I hate to say it but I haven't been very active on lemmy, but I want to be3·1 year agoPiefed has keyword filtering by default, as well as a lot of other neat features.
It’s very much based around subscribing to communities, so you won’t see random things that are trending in random communities on the front page. For better or for worse I guess. I like it a lot, but I use it in combination with kbin where I’m more likely to stumble across random things (like this thread). :)
sab@kbin.socialto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Multilingual folks: what are some odd idioms in your language(s)?2·1 year agoHaving pigs in the forest - to be hiding something.
The tax man would go from farm to farm back in the old days and count the number of pigs. The farmers would be taxed accordingly. Naturally, when you heard the tax man was coming, you’d send some pigs into the forest so that you’d be taxed less. Norwegian. :)
I’m currently experimenting with Seppo for my website, which is… not ready yet. So maybe not the greatest suggestion. But development is happening fast, and I like it for a couple of reasons.
- It’s incredibly easy to install. Just upload a file, set permissions, and open it in the browser. I’m somewhat incompetent, so I appreciate that even though deploying WordPress is obviously not very difficult either.
- Content is stored in basic XML files, making it easy to access with just basic PHP and an XSLT stylesheet. Basically it easy to incorporate posts into your site however you want it.
- It federates with ActivityPub, so people can follow your blog directly and get the content directly into their feeds.
- It’s lightweight - very little bullshit.
Basic functionality such as editing and deleting posts does not work yet, so it’s absolutely not ready for primetime. But it’s a project worth following, especially for those of us with an interest in the social web.
Edit: I guess this would be more if you wanted to create a basic website yourself, and add a tool for content management to it. I read the post a bit too quickly - if you’re not interested in writing some code there are much better options to go for out there. Seppo I think is nice for those who actively want to tinker a bit. :)
sab@kbin.socialto Fediverse@lemmy.world•About federation with Threads: how is it possible that lemmy.world is federated?14·1 year agoYou cannot view microblog posts from Lemmy, so the only way you’ll see anything from Threads is if a user from there responds to content posted to Lemmy or similar sites. Possibly also if they choose to tag a community in their post, but that seems unlikely for anything else than testing purposes.
Same as Mastodon users, really.

sab@kbin.socialto Uplifting News@lemmy.world•Texas Girl Born in Jail Heading to Harvard After Graduating at the Top of Her Class8·1 year agoYou are completely right, and I think everyone in power realizes that. They also realize that they can buy a spot for their kids in a good university, but there is no way in hell their kids would make it to the top any other way. So they have no interest in changing it.
Changing the way universities work in the US would require a freaking revolution. It’s not about giving opportunities to those from worse-off backgrounds; it’s about taking away opportunities from the rich and tearing down structures of inherited power. So naturally the resistance to doing so is going to be immense, and whoever sets out to do it need to know what they’re up against.
Probably why the republicans are so angry about forgiving student loan debts.

sab@kbin.socialto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•If money was not an issue, would you move to an entirely different state or country?2·1 year agoI’m in the process of finishing up my PhD in Italy and moving somewhere much less pleasant where pay is much better. So I guess it’s rather the opposite in my case: Had money not been an issue I would have stayed where I am.
Yeah, there’s ways around it for sure, so it’s not the end of the world.
I’m not super technical though, so as my hosting provider uses Google for HTTPS authentication I’ll just reluctantly stick with that for now. Of course I could have found a different provider, but I found it a somewhat difficult market to navigate. I’m enough of a rookie that part of me is just happy things seem to be working - when I set up the website a few months ago I kind of assumed HTTPS was some black magic stuff that I would never manage to implement.
And http still works in any browser I know of.
I kind of get your frustration though. I set up my personal website precisely to get away from big platforms; yet my HTTPS is validated by Google. It feels like a defeat still having them involved in the process.
sab@kbin.socialto World News@lemmy.world•European leaders call for stronger defence ties after Trump’s Nato remarks2·1 year ago“The” economy is going great, but since the US has an insane problem of inequality caused by decades of trickle down economics, this does not necessarily translate to the lived experience of ordinary people.
Standing up for unions and student loan forgiveness are two examples of policies the current administration pursue in order to deal with this. They are very limited by what they can do because the senate sucks.
If you don’t have any luck dumpster diving it might be worth checking if any of your local supermarkets (or even bakeries) are using Too Good to Go. They decide how much to put in the package, but a generous place will give you a bunch of food for very little money.
