World News@lemmy.world•George RR Martin’s publisher defends new Game of Thrones book amid AI artwork claimsEnglish
3·21 days agoIf I remember correctly they were doing an illustrated version of the book each year and then the series got delayed because they fell out with the orginal illustrator.
So it would make sense that this one would be shit, because even if its not AI errors like this are basic shit to get right, because I believe the dispute was over money.

2·29 days agoTry this one for the best books, you won’t have all the plot lines but the main plot was decided decades before the series even started

2·29 days agoI think this list is pretty close to the best books, you can jump off with series based on your favourite characters like Garro if they click for you: https://booksreadlisten.com/best-horus-heresy-books/
Couple those with the Siege of Terra but skip may be the first wall (as I detest Thorpes writing) and Mortis as its a bit boring.
People might say that way spoilers lye, however the ending was main lore even before the series started.

25·30 days agoThey didn’t expect the success of the first few that made the times best seller list, thats like massively more than they expected to sell, so they increased the planned number and the quality dropped massively as they expanded to the authors to suit.
If you read just the best books you’d still get the same favour but cut it to about 20 books or so, including the best ones in the Siege of Terra that are the actual ending.

Technology@lemmy.world•Google pulls the plug on first and second gen Nest ThermostatsEnglish
3·1 month agoExcept in the UK you can’t as they don’t sell them. They also ended UK support for their smoke detectors as well.
I switched to opentherm hardware and its now on my HA properly rather than via the cloud.
I did get a good ten years out the Nest hardware, I consider that reasonable for what it cost. Sure old fashioned controllers last longer, but i want the smart features

Technology@lemmy.world•Study Boldly Claims 4K And 8K TVs Aren't Much Better Than HD To Your Eyes, But Is It True?English
1·1 month agoQuality of the system is such a massive dependency here, I can well believe that someone watching old reruns from a shitty streaming service that is upscaled to 1080p or 4k by their TV they purchased from the supermarket with coupons collected from their breakfast cereal is going to struggle to tell the difference.
Likewise if you fed the TVs with a high end 4k blu ray player and any blu ray considered reference such as Interstellar, you are still going to struggle to tell the difference, even with a more midrange TV unless the TVs get comically large for the viewing distance so that the 1080p screen starts to look pixelated.
I think very few people would expect their old wired apple earphones they got free with their iphone 4 would expect amazing sound from them, yet people seem to be ignoring the same for cheap TVs. I am not advocating for ultra high end audio/videophile nonsense with systems costing 10s of thousands, just that quite large and noticeable gains are available much lower down the scale.
Depending what you watch and how you watch it, good quality HDR for the right content is an absolute home run for difference between standard 1080p and 4k HDR if your TV can do true black. Shit TVs do HDR shitterly, its just not comparable to a decent TV and source. Its like playing high rez loss less audio on those old apple wired earphones vs. playing low bitrate MP3s.

2·1 month agoYeah its gets a lot easier when you chase through an electrical issue yourself, but its not for everybody. My first few cars I did that, breaking old ones to provide spares/upgrades but I do not have room where I am now and I certainly do not have the time I did to manage it. Have you looked at the lithium battery upgrade?
tankplanker@lemmy.worldtoInsanePeopleFacebook@lemmy.world•I just find this funny. Not his debt, but debt over not one but two Cybertrucks.
2·1 month agoLol, complex hybrid for long lasting cheap to maintain car. I think most of the Prius model years are great, a few are pretty bad, not Ford Pinto bad, just not good. A hybrid wouldn’t be my first choice to do mega miles in though, not unless I was sure I could manage the work on the electrical systems myself.
tankplanker@lemmy.worldtoInsanePeopleFacebook@lemmy.world•I just find this funny. Not his debt, but debt over not one but two Cybertrucks.
1·1 month agoIts considerably cheaper, if its reliable, cheap to repair when it breaks most likely because you can fix it yourself, doesn’t cost a small fortune to refuel it and/or your weekly mileage is low.
Unreliable shit boxes that you do not have the time and/or skills to fix yourself, and drink fuel when doing a high mileage lifestyle, its a much more marginal conversation when compared to a (cheaper than these two shitty tesla) brand new car with a warranty and full maintenance included in the lease.
US always seems hellbent on shitty 7 year loans with huge APR to fully outright buy a brand new expensive truck when the owner does at least 20k miles a year. It really is an awful way to get access to a car, a lease would be considerably better for someone who wants to regularly change to a new car and will pay a premium to do so over buying and running an old car.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is the most controversial TV finale?
19·1 month agoWith Lost they repeatedly said that nobody, not a single person, had guessed what the ending was, not realizing that this was one of the first shows to go massive for fan theories on the Internet so everything even remotely plausable had been guessed.
So yeah, they painted themselves into that corner fair and square as it was clear they had no fucking clue what the ending was when they started that show.
If it was me, I would have admitted someone guessed it and just picked whichever fan theory seemed the most sensible to me.
I did Samsung dex for a while, its ok as long as you don’t want low level access to what you connecting to.
Now I switched to a gpd micropc 2 and its built in ethernet, sd card, usb a and c sockets and native linux make it so much more useful. No longer do i need dongles or other rubbish.
Plus it will do multiple monitor support, something dex struggles with. The keyboard is a little small for touch typing but the former factor is worth the trade of for me.
Dumbest person I know also happens to be a super nice, always happy, and also very attractive. She’s never struggled to get work ever, even for her dream job as a teacher when she had to take her foundational English and Math exams three times.
I would say she has a better life than the majority of people, never had a day of stress ever as everything has always worked out for her.

World News@lemmy.world•Kyoto struggling with tourists defacing beloved bamboo forestEnglish
4·1 month agoI would stay near (ish) to Kyoto and just go one day, the National Museum in Kyoto is really good and you can see the rest of what you want to see quite quickly. It is about as commercialized as you can get for a town in Japan, its approaching Disney levels of parody.
Staying further away lowers the cost and as long as its on one of the direct train lines into Kyoto it doesnt take long to get there. There is a lot to do in daily travelable distance in the region that is a better use of your time.

Technology@lemmy.world•What would stop you from switching to a flip phone (or dumbphone) in 2025?English
1·3 months agoI would buy a feature phone today, preferably something eink, if it was painless to switch my SIM between it and my smart phone. Having to take the SIM out of one, put it in the other, then turn on the phone is not painless and they do not design the little draws to support thousands of open/closes against the contacts to read the SIM.
There are times I want the smart phone to have the SIM because I will want or need the extra functionality and if you just make the feature phone do everything then its just morphed into a smart phone with extra steps. I want the feature phone to be basic as I can get away with.
That said, I really want google wallet or similar that I can share between the two phones for my passes and tickets, audio streaming support, and maps. Something like a Hisense A9 would fit the bill but the temptation to add more apps than the basics would be too great, plus I still need a way to switch SIMs between the phones.
I cannot replace my smart phone, rather than supplement, with any feature phone because I use it for such a wide range of things. I can ssh from it to my home devices, I can manage my bank accounts, it tracks my health, it provides video and audio streaming on and offline, I can read and write documents/spreadsheets, plus anything you can do via a web browser.

A Boring Dystopia@lemmy.world•The Job Market Is Hell: Young people are using ChatGPT to write their applications; HR is using AI to read them; no one is getting hired.
2·3 months agoThere is also third party recruiters for specialist positions such as IT, Law, etc. who are often the only entry point into a particular firms open positions.
At their best you used to be able to actually speak to them and they would go find a job for you. They would help you tailor your CV and cover letter to suit, prep you for the interview, etc. They are typically paid by the hiring company a significant percentage of your salary in installments if you get hired. You can pay for this service now, but getting a good one is hard.
I used to get direct contacts from them for positions that actually matched what I can do for a salary that would actually match what I am after. They used to have an actual industry knowledge and contacts.
Now, at their worst they spam people on linkedin with connection requests for positions that are completely unsuitable, AI has made this far far worse now. They often use a ghost position just to farm CVs for future positions, totally counterproductive if you wanted to tailor your CV for a position.

36·3 months agoI am sorry Mario, your job is in another castle.
But seriously, best of luck
Metallica still make a stack of money every year touring, however they could make even more money if they stuck Lars in a booth and charged fans $50 to punch Lars in the face.
Its been said that if Cliff hadn’t died in the bus accident, Lars would have been fired at the end of that tour, just if you didn’t feel bad enough about Cliff dying already.

Its cheating, they should be treated the same as any other cheater on the course. A lot of UK unis would go as far as kicking some one off the entire degree for persistent cheating and its highly probable this was not the only paper they cheated on.
Until there are actual consequences it wont stop being so blatant. Only real way to prevent this is an actual defense of any end of module work and exams, either in person or via Zoom/Teams.
