Better for people with physical handicaps

The majority of physical disabilities prevent people from driving, resulting in a loss of mobility and freedom when they do not have viable alternatives. Many people who do not bike for transport and do not talk to people who bike for transport see a handicap parking spot and assume that everybody with a handicap drives.

People cycling and using public transit free up road space for the minority of people with handicaps who drive. I know two utilitarian cyclists with disabilities who cannot drive but use a bicycle as their primary means of transportation.

Can be more easily/comfortably used in extreme weather

Wear a jacket. Many of us go for walks in extreme weather. There are very cold and hot countries all over the world that have high rates of bicycle usage for transport. The problem usually lies in cities designing and maintaining their roads in a hostile way to all forms of transportation other than bicycles in the winter. Look at Montreal and Oulu for counter-examples. Even the Netherlands gets constant rain.

Public transport is great until you have to take multiple hops on extremely busy, infrequently running services which arent even direct

It’s worth pointing out that this not a function of public transit but rather of car-centric design where private vehicles are the fastest and most convenient means of transportation. It also harms those who cannot afford a private vehicle and those with disabilities preventing them from driving.

Mobility is just as important for young people. The difference is that cars are much less affordable for young people who are choosing better alternatives such as transit and bikes.

The average new vehicle is $66,422 CAD and the average for a used vehicle is $37,662, as per autotrader.ca. A new vehicle is nearly the same as an entire year’s salary of an average Canadian according to statscan and that doesn’t account for the total cost of ownership.

It’s important for people to tackle the issues from many angles, including both zoning and dangerous vehicle design. I’d argue the real waste of our grass-roots energy is going after each other.

This is a great way to do it too! Many streets even have a 40km/h speed limit but are built wide enough to accommodate 80km/h, so drivers often speed and increase fatalities.

Bike lanes are proven to increase revenue for businesses in their vicinity. Car parking takes up valuable space in a city which could be used more productively.

Many communities have some number of jerks. I actually find that people constantly stereotype based on outliers they hear about online. I’ve met very few vegans who were normal, reasonable prople, yet I’ve met very many people who steteotype and hate on vegans despite knowing none.

Reducing congestion is mostly attempted by building and expanding highways, which is proven not to reduce congestion. The vast majority of the budget is spent on building and expending highways.

Seniors should have quality public transport options to use and bike/walking infrastructure for short trips or mobility scooters.
