It’s funny because he lies to his significant other instead of fixing his own issues.
Nah, it’s funny because he wins the Valentine’s game. Partner gets flowers albeit dead ones, but it’s literally the thought that counts. He saves money and store doesn’t profit from stupid money-grubbing holiday.
Take webcomics seriously and get into fights with strangers.

The fix to being broke is to get more money.
