Nicaragua’s petition centers on accusations that Germany’s actions violate crucial international treaties, including the 1948 Genocide Convention and the 1949 Geneva Convention. By providing financial and military aid to Israel and discontinuing support for the UNRWA, Nicaragua argues, Germany is complicit in facilitating genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. This case echoes a prior action by South Africa against Israel, in which the ICJ ruled that allegations of genocide by Israel in Gaza were plausible, leading to an order for emergency measures.
Germany, recognized as one of the largest arms exporters to Israel alongside the United States, finds itself at a critical juncture. The ICJ’s decision to hear Nicaragua’s request for emergency measures places Berlin under international scrutiny, raising questions about the legality of its support for Israel. The global community watches closely, as the court’s ruling could set a precedent for international law, particularly concerning the obligations of nations under the Genocide Convention and laws of war.
I’m German and I support Nicaragua in this matter.
So let’s not look into Nicaragua and it’s past history.
The Miskito Indians Conflict (1981-1988), or The Atlantic Coast Uprising (1983) Or perhaps the The 1987 Jesuit Priests Massacre.
I get that things have changed since Ortega, but wow, if this isn’t calling the kettle black in some ways. Not that I am against their actions by the way and yes, it is atrocious that German arms are feeding this abhorrent attack on the Palestinians.
Not that you’re wrong but why bring it up at all? It feels like what aboutism, which is strange if you agree with the case against Germany.
Well I have some life experience living through some of these events, it just seems right to highlight how we are all not so innocent in our pasts, we should be aware and responsible for our actions. But yes, I perhaps don’t need to highlight a small central American countries past in the light of such atrocities.
That makes sense if it affected you personally. But yeah the horror and scale of the killings in Gaza kind of make everything else seem minor at the moment.
Ukraine would like to chime in…
I hate to sound like I am defending Russia but I think people just don’t understand the scale of the carnage in Gaza. This is by far the bloodiest attack in decades and I believe the term genocide does apply here. That is not to say that what Russia has done is acceptable but this is much worse and we in the West have far more leverage to stop the killing in Gaza than we do in Ukraine.
That’s objectively untrue. Ukraine has like a dozen Gaza’s right now. And Sudan is a worse environment where there’s multiple simultaneous genocides happening right now.
Did you read the link I posted? That is directly addressed. People in Gaza are dying at 5x the rate of Ukraine or Sudan. It is truly an unthinkable massacre.
It’s tragic that these things are happening simultaneously and must divide our attention this way but as an American only one of these mass killings is being directly funded by my tax dollars. And it happens to be the bloodiest of the bunch by a huge margin.
South America has issues with colonial border since the europeans colonisers left, and later on also due to US intervensions. Nicaragua has additionally a horrifying past from the Sandinistas revolution -supported by people from all over the world- that succeeded and turned authoritarian, as they do. Not that long ago. Many people who fought in it are still alive. To my understanding they still suffer the consequences.
In order for the US-backed state of Israel to stop killing and starving civilians and children, all other countries need to demand it by diplomatic pressures, economic sanctions, boycott etc.
Does that imply that Nicaragua is incapable of recognizing genocide facilitation?
The kettle is black, doesn’t matter who says it.
I don’t want to retract my comment; I understand that not everything is whataboutism or black and white in history. Nicaragua is right to condemn Germany, and I support that. However, sometimes I feel our access to global affairs and the education we receive can be incredibly narrow, especially if we rely on media outlets to feed us information. Generations come and go, and historical events are often left unexplored, particularly if they involve any shadow of U.S. interference.
Daniel Ortega is still in power today, and some would characterize his past and current actions as those of a despot. Yes, wiping out Gaza is on another level, I agree, but with my opinion I’d like to encourage people to read a bit about Ortega and his sordid past https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Ortega
Ah yes the time period when America was fucking up their country. Glad you bring that one up. Great idea that instead of shitting on Germany we shit on America just a little bit more.
In 1983 the U.S. Congress prohibited federal funding of the Contras, but the Reagan administration illegally continued to back them by covertly selling arms to Iran and channeling the proceeds to the Contras in the Iran–Contra affair, for which several members of the Reagan administration were convicted of felonies
