I don’t understand this kind of posts, why there’s always a version without a cat in it?
The first type of this post I saw was Garfield minus Garfield. That one was more enjoyable because most of the comics just looked like Jon was very depressed and talked to himself.
I’m not sure when Heathcliff got a minus cat version, or if there are other versions. I think it’s just a exercise in creativity to see if the comic still is funny/makes sense even if the OG comic joke is different.
I started removing Heathcliff near the start of last year after realizing he rarely contributed to the “joke.” There are very different edits of Heathcliff out there. I didn’t know about them until after I started mine and found a whole community of crazy.
To see if the presence of the cat actually impacts the “joke.”
Highlights for me:
- Grandpa Nutmeg hovering next to a tree, not actually sitting on a branch
- In something of a fratboy move, Grandpa has decided to shave the left side of his moustache off, altho keeping the right
- Grandpa’s new eye in the edit intrigues me. Seems like I’ve seen that look before in the Egyptian section of the local art museum.
The eye seemed to directional towards Heathcliff so I edited it. I looked for other examples of his eyes and based the new one off that. I wasn’t even sure anyone would notice that.
I wasn’t going to fix the half shaved look. I needed to preserve that NAPGism.
Didn’t even notice the floating. But you are correct.
When I went to remove Heathcliff I instinctively checked to see if I needed to correct him floating out of the window like a cardboard cutout overlapping with the frame because that always happens in Heathcliff comics. All that even though I knew I was going to remove him and it didn’t matter.
Hahaha… I’ve pointed that out so many times that I’m glad it eventually stuck, i.e. the ‘cardboard cutout’ thing and the windows built out of physics from Flatland.
I needed to preserve that NAPGism.
I know I’m frequently complaining about Gallagher’s consistency of professionalism, but it really is sort of wonderful the way he’s such a huge slacker in that way. So much more interesting than the consistent but totally banal ‘production type’ comics of some of his colleagues.

This is my favorite edit yet! Well done!
