Why is it always a woman leaving in memes?

I feel like it’s always “my wife left me” and never “my husband left me.”

Many parts of society encourage men to complain about their wives, and many parts mock men for being unappealing for women. Either way, it’s funny.

Many parts of society look down on women for complaining, and many parts discourage mocking a woman for being unappealing to men. Either way, it’s uncomfortable.

The artist just wrote from their perspective. It’s not some secret message about gender roles.

Right, and I didn’t try to make it that way, did I? I was making a statement about what I’ve seen in these kinds of jokes. It’s always—or at the very least mostly, by a wide margin—the woman leaving.

You’re not the first person to read some sort of political statement in my question… I fail to see why. Why are you so weirdly attuned to this? And why are you so quick to jump at it? Message about gender roles? What are you even talking about?
