I always assumed it was a lasso.
I was really expecting them to lean into my stupid old joke. I’m a vegetarian once removed, I only eat animals that only eat plants.
Can’t even clear that low bar of creativity.
I can’t help but feel like this is the most important part of the article:
The model’s refusal to accept information to the contrary, meanwhile, is no doubt rooted in the safety mechanisms OpenAI was so keen to bake in, in order to protect against prompt engineering and injection attacks.
Do any of you believe that these “safety mechanisms” are there just for safety? If they can control ai, they will. This is how we got mecha-hitler, same mucking about with weights and such, not just what it was trained on.
They WILL, they already are, trying to control how ai “thinks”. This is why it’s desperately important to whatever we can to democratize ai. People have already decided that ai has all the answers, and folks like peter thiel now have the single most potent propaganda machine in history.
I’ve been playing with ai, pushing the limits of it as a therapy tool (I’m being honest, but I’m using myself as a test case). I’m really trying to evaluate it in good faith, mostly to try to see what’s addicting folks to it these days.
I just cannot get it to pass my “Turing test”. It’s just so sycophantic. Every time I get close to feeling like there’s something there, it falls back into the “blow smoke up your ass mode.”
So far my hours of conversing has only convinced me that folks who follow chatbot advice for such important life decisions, probably deserve it. I’m happily married, but if a girl ever broke up with me because a LLM told her to, I’d probably login to thank it (joke).
I’m in a similar boat, senior level IT, but I feel like I’m the only one of my peers who can see ai for what it is, I mean, I don’t hate it, it’s a tool. I do hate the tools who use it though.
I do think ai will fundamentally change the world similar to how the internet did. But, just like the early internet we’re in the midst of a bubble. This time the bubble though is full of toxic gas, and inflating it has caused so much environmental damage. We never learn our lesson so this time it’s going to be so much fucking worse. To top it all off we have the absolute worst possible stewards to guide us through when it happens.
Pretty much today old.
Hard agree.
Yes, there was a whole running narrative about bill the cat having his brain replaced with trumps back in the 80’s. my now completely crazy, maga dad, turned me on to bloom county as a kid so most of my politics likely took root with a large nosed penguin and his friends. Then when I hit high school, I found rage against the machine.
But yeah, I never watched any of his reality shows, this is the turnip I knew, until he became the actual president. My brain has not recovered.
I’m middle aged now, but I have to admit, while I’ve always known there was racism still around, and still part of the government. I’m blown away though at just how much more of it, and how deeply rooted it is. The kind of people in charge right now are literal cartoon villains when I was a kid.
I mean that literally.
I wish I could disagree but every day when I try to talk about it, or get people to do something about it with me, so far 100% of time I get pushback for being alarmist, or that it’s fine, we’ll just vote better next time.
It’s more than just the apathy, it’s willing apathy, desired apathy, WEAPONOZED apathy. That’s the problem, those in control know they are working against the will of the people, but they also know the people are to scared, distracted, lazy and stupid to do anything about it.
Bingo! Many years back I stopped watching them when they killed their storage system. It was a Rube Goldberg that was destined to fail and I suddenly realized the channel was actively making me stupider if I followed their advice.
wholeheartedly agree. I was but 19 years old though and less wise in the ways of the world. I occasionally try to look her up but have had no luck, I really hope she turned out ok. Been decades though.
Lol, this literally happened to me once.
Long story short, a girl I knew but always figured was way out of my league expressed interest in me. We quickly started dating, I thought I was the luckiest guy in the world. A few weeks go by and she just ghosts me. Nothing for weeks, I was going nuts. Finally I get a message from her, she had checked herself into the psych ward, and wound up hooking up with one of the staff while she was there.
Dodged a real one there…
I mean, this is probably my eventual fate. I have the mantra of “I’ll try anything twice”. It’s led me to some questionable, but so far outrageously fun, adventures in local cuisine.
Right. I’m not against driverless taxis, but they are just another thing that does an already solved job. Maybe it will be a wee bit cheaper, maybe not, but at the end of the day, it’s not me, the user or the service, that these things are for. They are for the cab companies to make bigger profits, maybe pass some savings on to us (not likely, in fact I’ll bet a dollar they charge a premium).
I just don’t get why the hype cycle has captured everyone. Woo, a computer can drive a car, neat… I that’s all the reaction it needs.
Meh, I’ve taken a lot of cab rides, so far no murder. I’m fine taking my chances.

My relatives who’ve been screaming about mark of the beast and shit for years sure confuse the hell Out of me when they voice support for this while wearing their maga hats.
