You can either decide by what is currently in demand in the industry and then pick a project that you can exercise that language with or you can think of a project you’d like to do and then go by what the best language is for a given project.

In the end, languages are just like different wrenches. First you have to learn how to use a wrench, size or features don’t matter much at this point (unless you already know that you want to become an expert with one particular wrench).

I think starting a new project is way easier than contributing to an existing one.

Keep at it. Do actual projects. Actually use the tools for a while. It will eventually make sense.

Ask chatGPT (as one step of your search for a framework that suits your needs)

I have been trying to find a suitable existing solution and by just explaining what I want it to do, chatGPT output a bunch of potentially interesting projects, which I didn’t bump into through searchengines. (And a lot of unrelated bogus, but it was a very good starting point anyways)

I had some similar symptoms on a Fritzbox router, because by default the devices connected over wifi were unable to communicate with those connected by cable. Some routers also had this setting for the different wifi bands, 2.4G & 5G.

But I don’t think you’d be able to ping it if this were the case.

Check yoyr router settings anyway, maybe you’ll find something there.

For me the best learning came from actually working on huge, complex projects - then seeing the problems that come with that - then looking for ways to improve the situation.

There used to be a kickstarter project that wanted to create that, but as a physical clock on the wall.

It was supposed to able to show your daily activities. But the key aspect was a 24h clock and visual presentation of day and night times.

I’m pretty sure chatgpt caught mistakes like these for me recently and in the past. Just always slap in all your code into the prompt and tell it what you want the code to do step by step. Like with rubber ducky debugging.

Sorry I didn’t read your post in depth. But if you need switches, especially with lots of ports or PoE, older Alcatel-Lucent switches are rock-solid and relatively cheap off ebay, cause lots of companies that used them are upgrading. Just make sure to find one that fits your requirements per port.

It only broke twice for me from updates during the 5 year period. 1. grub 2. openjdk

and the openjdk one simply didn’t update until I uninstalled the old one and reinstalled the new one.

I have been on arch professionally for ~5 years.

I am a GUI fan and I don’t like fucking around with the OS. In fact, I don’t even want to think about it at all.

So far it hardly required any maintenance (much less than Ubuntu, Windows or Mac, at least for my workflows).

And the only fucking around I did with it was the first two days setting everything up just the way I like.

To be fair, I already had extensive linux knowledge at the point of switching to arch - through ~4 years of constantly breaking my Debians and Ubuntus every couple of months.

tldr:

• fucking with configs for hours regularly

Ah makes sense. Still there should be no issue with doing stuff the normal way.

apt update doesn’t update your OS to a whole new version.

The command for an OS update is something like “do-release-upgrade” (but I forgot the exact name since I havent used debian for years)

I don’t know why your software or OS can not be updated.

According to the official instructions (https://github.com/mcguirepr89/BirdNET-Pi/wiki/Installation-Guide) is should just be a normal raspbian. Nothing on there says it needs a legacy version, but I may be overlooking something.

If you installed it some other way or did it long ago then maybe do the setup over again from scratch with the newest raspbian version? (Don’t forget to backup any data you’d want to keep)
