Not to mention teachers (it steals our lessons and tutoring work), writers (it steals their work and rehashes it), musicians (music generation is a thing), programmers (so many code snippets, so few coding jobs), and many more.

HexesofVexes@lemmy.worldto Off My Chest@lemmy.world•my boyfriend plays video games every chance he getsEnglish8·8 days agoSo, long (long) term gamer here. Case in point, partner went out for dinner with a friend so I just sunk 6 hours into an old favourite (a game older than my students).
A relationship is a two way street - sometimes you do need that space for a solo hobby, other times your partner needs you. You find that balance, but not always.
Sometimes a partner wants too much alone time, sometimes they never let you be alone. Neither of partner is a bad person, it’s just a difference found in people.
The best advice is to have a chat, negotiate a little, find a middle ground where you’re both happy. My partner wanted a bit more physical affection, I wanted a bit less verbal, we found a happy mix. If you’re burning for a talk, maybe write down what you want to say to get your thoughts clear, think about your wants and needs, then have a friendly chat over tea (or video game genocide - you’d be amazed).

I look forward to hearing about the workarounds kids find.
My short stories may not be amazing, but at least I wrote them.
I’ll extend this further - students are also not ok.
What I’ve observed this year is that a lot of students are opting for AI taught methods, or asking AI to summarise course materials for them. They then make bad copies into their notes, conflate these methods with those taught in class, then fail hard when an open note exam comes around.
The truth of the matter is we’ll see a post-AI degree lose its value against a pre-AI degree, and this will create a new vehicle of intergenerational inequality.
Teachers are never going to be ok - we’re “essential workers”, and we all know what that means. Our students though, they believe their actions are buying them a better future; when they learn otherwise, they’ll need all the support they can get!

Students prep their own notes (usually limited to “X pages”), take them into the exam, gets to use them for answering questions.
Tests application and understanding over recall. If students AI their notes, they will be useless.
Been running my exams as open note for 3 years now - so far so good. Students are happy, I don’t have to worry about cheating, and the university remains permanently angry because they want everything to be coursework so everyone gets an AI A ^_^

Social media, however, is no less controversial (it’s just the media likes to hype this more).
I will say - the point of a porn site is to sell user data and deliver ads, whereas the point of social media is to keep the user scrolling by any means possible. By its design, the latter cultivates addiction as a clear goal (the goal to scroll is artificially imposed), whereas the case for the former is less clear (the goal to masturbate isn’t something porn created). In essence, one creates a drive and then sates it, whereas another sates an existing drive.
Honestly, I think, at the moment, we’re on the “violent video games cause violence” stage of the research. In other words, not enough data to decide so the media has decided for us.
HexesofVexes@lemmy.worldto Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•"This is so dangerous!", laments the woman driving directly into a Critical Mass bike rideEnglish53·1 month agoThat seems somewhat foolish - a driver delayed by such an event is liable to be angry and complain rather than feel that surrender is necessary.
If other posts in this thread are correct (let’s walk out on that limb), and politicians try to meet the demand of drivers over cyclists, then this is more likely to lead to stricter laws against cyclists as a result of drivers issuing (very justified in this case) complaints.
An effective protest wins both sympathy and ire, and leads to more voices calling out for your cause - this one just inspires ire. It doesn’t unequivocally paint the picture “vote for cycle infrastructure or else”, it more emphatically implies “too many cyclists will add to my commute, just look how bad it is now, we need less of them, so I will now vote against anything for cyclists”.
Just to point out, for the record, I’m in the third camp - pedestrians. I’ve seen drivers dangerously overtake, I’ve seen cyclists randomly pull out forcing emergency stops, and I’ve seen both put pedestrians at risk with self righteous indifference. My take home from the post is “more legislation is needed for cyclists using the road inappropriately”, not “we need more cycle lanes” and definitely not “we need more shared space sidewalks”.
Well, that was a mass of criticism for a critical mass; one wonders if the critical masses will mass against this criticism or perhaps such masses will critically reflect instead and engage in mass critical thinking!
HexesofVexes@lemmy.worldto Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•"This is so dangerous!", laments the woman driving directly into a Critical Mass bike rideEnglish1026·1 month agoA critical mass to be massively critical of the critical masses. I’m certain folks who see or hear of such protests are going to become very sympathetic to the cyclist cause. Am I doing the mass criticism thing right?
It’s a nice way to blow off steam and feel important, but I suspect it polarises against rather than towards the desired cause. Shame really since it looks fun!
It’s on my old netbook, it will never leave.
That thing is nearing 20 now I think!
Ah! Now I know this one, it usually happens a few months after you shuffle off the mortal coil. Nothing to worry about, it’s a problem that solves itself!
Other than that, I’m afraid you’re stuck with it - a bit like marriage “till death do us part”.

The big issues with age gaps is mostly down to protective probability. By 30 most folks are experienced enough at life to make up their own mind.
Hope it goes well for you both!

Add censorship for mods containing adult (sexual) content.
Slowly move the bar so that more content falls under definition of “adult” (themes of violence, LGBTQ+ themes).
Continue to move the bar until desired level of censorship is obtained.
Well done, you’ve used moral panic to control your media.
Dark futures aside, why do I think that folks are just going to VPN their way in?
