In Rat Park the rats who were alone and had a choice between the regular water and the drug water always chose the drug water but the rats living in healthy communities preferred the regular water so they could be sober around their loved ones. Although it’s just a joke, the cartoon rat feeling the need to say goodbye to the cocaine button it bonded to hit me pretty good today.

I was watching a documentary in which the director was interviewing people who lived hunter/gatherer lives. He asked someone what they thought happened after death, and the response was that they put the dead bodies in the cave. Despite the director’s best efforts to clarify what he meant, the man responded that the bodies go in the cave and looked at the director like he was stupid for continuing to ask the same question.

They had no concept of an afterlife despite being a continuous ethnic group for longer than agriculture has existed. For all that time until today there was no need for promises only granted after death. It’s disturbing to me how important that promise is for most of us, otherwise the world we made for ourselves could be intolerable.

Good old humanity. Whether single or in a relationship the other state is optimal. When you’re single you don’t have to deal with the issues of being in a relationship and when you’re in a relationship you don’t have to worry about the issues of being single. The fantasy of what we’re not currently living with will always be better. It’s the hedonic treadmill. My fantasy is unbelievably amazing and couldn’t possibly be, but my reality is pretty cool so that’s fine with me.
