Sadly I think that might be the only way to make it stop. But it doesn’t feel right. If a waiter/waitress is getting a zero dollar paycheck, that means they’re making more than some minimum amount. If we stop tipping, they’ll be paid that minimum amount. In our effort to get service jobs fairly paid, should we punish them by paying them less first?

It’s a dark pattern. Maybe at one point in time people would be tricked into believing $3.99 was emotionally a lot less than $4 but we’ve grown up with it now for several generations. Everyone knows it costs more anyway because of taxes not being applied until the register. The mistrust is built into the system out of tradition more than anything.

I agree with a comment I once saw in this community that including the punchline in the title, rather than the body, is the equivalent of getting the timing wrong when telling the joke.
