  • That won’t really work as that is the worst scenario for solar. I can give you real world data from southern germany. I don’t have balcony solar, but a 13,4kWp solar system on my roof. Here is the data from this year:

As you can see, days are getting longer in Feb, generation is going up. To get a rough estimate, take my data and divide it by 16,75. That won’t give you a lot of heating, esp. with a normal space heater. Even if you had a scenario, where your 800W solar system would produce 800W in the winter, your space heater will suck 2000W. Take a look at its power cord, you’ll see how much it uses.

So yeah, 800W is not much, but will cover your running appliances like your fridge, freezer, router or computer on sunny days.

  • That kind of depends on what you’re building. Standard is currently 800W (2 standard solar panels). Older models use 600W, other models are using 2000W and limit it to 800W. That doesn’t make much sense, but skirts our local regulations that limits them to 800W, but of course generates more energy.

It then also depends on where you live. Can you point it to the sun? Do you live in sunny Spain or in northern Norway? In Germany a 800W system can produce 800-1200kWh per year. Our average electricity price is at 0.35€, so you’ll save 280€-420€ a year. And those systems are dirt cheap, there are deals out there where you can get one for 200€. That is quite a good ROI for something that you can install in an hour.

  • Smart Lights It is great to be able to control the light. Make it bright and cold for cleaning or work, dim it and make it warm for cozy evenings. Wake up by slowly increasing the light instead of burning your eyes in the morning with the power of 1000 suns. Even those Philips Hue Kits are not that expensive, but there are even cheaper alternative bulbs out there. Look for Zigbee, they are all kind of compatible.

HomeAssistant Get a cheap thinclient or raspberry pi (~100€). Set everything up. Control your smart stuff with an awesome privacy friendly interface and build automations you couldn’t even dream about a few years back (like “Water the lawn, but not if rain is predicted”)

robot vacuum Why should i vacuum my house when there is a robot totally capable of doing it?

3D printer Sounds a little bit crazy, but you can buy a 3D printer at ~150€+ and it’s awesome to print little custom fixes and stuff for your home. Is there some ugly gap or device somewhere? Print a custom cover. Broke something? Print the replacement part.

  • There are a lot and in most cases you’ll notice when dealing with Americans, who are refusing to do stuff like the rest of the world. The meter and kilogram took over from hundreds of different measurement standards. Most of the world is using the same calendar and writes dates in the same way. Most countries are driving on the same side. Traffic signs are kind of the same worldwide. You can buy screws with the same standard everywhere.

  • We decided on some cheap silver rings. We really didn’t want to carry around something extremely valuable everywhere. Go swimming and lose 5000€ in the lake? Do some yard work and lose your diamond ring there? Getting mugged and the robber is getting something really expensive? No, thank you.

Expensive wedding rings & jewelery did make sense in the past when women were not allowed their own money, bank accounts etc. as a way to escape an abusive husband. Pawn your expensive wedding ring, get cash for the getaway. But we’re not living in the 50s, my wife has her own bank account, is earning her own money, so no need for something like that.

  • Fuck the whole conflict. Nobody will fucking solve the conflict by posting on the internet, but we are getting so many idiots spouting propaganda, misinformation and utter nonsense. Nothing good will come out of discussing this over 100 year old clusterfuck of a conflict online and nothing good will come from pushing a shit agenda into Wikipedia. The best way to deal with it is to just ignore everything about it.
