This sounds like my old place, but much worse.

We used to have laptops we had to lock in a cabinet (yeah, one of those cabinets with a really puny lock that’s easy to pick). And we had to log into n old mainframe system that had numerous environment instances which each required a unique password that had to be changed every 90 days.

We (the software devs) basically rebelled on the laptop situation and insisted they find a better solution. Thankfully they changed policy and of allowed the laptops to be locked into our docking stations, which in turn were locked to our desks.

As for the mainframe system credential management, I tried using a standard third party password manager, but a) it wasn’t a good fit for the credentials, and b) the sys admins or security team forcibly uninstalled it because it wasn’t sanctioned software (even though it was a well-respected and actively maintained one). And our security group refused to go out and find one.

So being a dev, I wrote my own desktop password manager for the mainframe credentials. It was decently secure, but nowhere near as secure as a retail password manager. But it fit the quirks of the mainframe credentials requirements. And after my colleagues and manager did a code review of it, it was considered internal software, and thus fit for use.

As I was leaving they were in the process of removing all our local admin rights (without a clear path on how to accommodate for us developers debugging code - fun times ahead!).

But all of those annoyances pale in comparison to the shit you are having to deal with! Holy hell, that sounds like pure misery! I’m sorry.

I hear ya. I’m dragging my heels on introducing social media to my kids. One of them is reaching a point where his friends are getting into it. Thankfully, so far he’s not really that interested. Also, my wife and I are taking the time to prime him about the dos and don’ts of social media, so hopefully he will have better awareness.

But between corporations and degenerate creeps preying on kids and teenagers (especially girls), it’s a troubling time to be a parent or guardian.

I’m fine with a ban on Tiktok. I think that platform adds nothing of significant value to society, and a lot of problems instead. But the bigger problem is that we need better accountability and safeguards for social media companies in general. And only targeting Tiktok because of their current ownership doesn’t get us there.

That’s a dark-as-fuck take. But honestly, you are probably on to something with it. Many evangelical ‘followers of Christ’ have a very different view on who he was than I and others do. Their Christ is a gun-wielding, xenophobic, intolerant, white skinned, white nationalist.

I wonder what the longevity of one of these discs is? The article says they can be manufactured in regular DVD production facilities, so it probably depends on the material used (which I think can range).

If they could combine something close to this data capacity level with the M-DISC standard (which supposedly last for about 1,000 years once you take into account the organic ingredients) that would be fantastic.

I also got one. I have a little bit of money sitting in a brokerage holding account, and I was already thinking of buying a single share as a joke (so I had the option to heckle them “as an investor in the company”). Having used Chat GPT to try to find solutions to software development challenges, I don’t think programmers will be at that much risk from AI for at least a decade.

Generative AI is great at many things, including assistance with basic software development tasks (like spinning up blueprints for unit tests). And it can be helpful filling in code gaps when provided with a very specific prompt… sometimes. But it is not great at figuring out the nuances of even mildly complex business logic.

It’s basically marketing people sniffing each other’s butts. To lay people (like you and I) the statements in the screenshots are vacuous, vague walls of useless babble. But to marketing people they are examples of how these companies can help you shape bullshit that dazzles C-suite executives and other senior business managers - they kinda of people who have the power to sign vendor contracts, but don’t usually have the insight to see past this kind of nonsense.

I’ve run into so many people who have had Dell laptops totally crap out / burn out on them. I saw several myself years ago through an old job. Mostly bad LCD displays right out of the box, but also an assortment of other problems. I vowed never to get a Dell computer of any kind after that.

Now in my current job we are forced to use refurbished Dell laptops. And guess what? All of them are total pieces of garbage. I’ve had two of them now. The first one became inoperable so they had to get me a new one. And now I find that the audio and USB ports are faulty on the new one.

I’m not surprised Dell is screwing over their lower-level employees, considering they consistently fuck over their customers. Fuck Dell.
