but the arch linux forum seems like it has a lot of helpful individuals, same as XDA developers :)
i love how “asking your peers” or “going on dedicated forums or communities” to ask questions is the most viable option atm.
it’s an arch linux machine. with proton and some tweaks to steamos you can run any game without a kernel level anticheat.
identification of cancer, development of vaccines, analysis of weather patterns and the ability to insta-translate speech and basically create real life subtitles are just small examples of vast usecases where AI was genuinely successful and a good use of the technology and there’s so much more.
We got to a point where a 50W specialized all-in-one-computing package can handle the workload of a local llm and outpace my gaming-rig which runs deepseek 8b. 50W is as much as a lightbulb in the 90’s. So the environmental impact goes away with time as technology progresses.
the issue lies with the corpos, not the technology.
Sure, collectively we could stop it. But those who oppose it are not numerous enough.
using llm’s to do base level coding with human oversight is fine imo.
I hate AI’s societal consequences and it’s profit motive. I hate the data collection, i hate the Surveillance Tech it’s used for. I hate how it shits on Artists. I hate that people use LLM’s to substitude human connections, i hate the (current) environmental impact

I hooope it’s not a huge issue? We all know the media treats 30 tweets about a topic as “the next new thing”. I totally understand the psychology behind (ab)using AI as a Friend substitute though - which makes this phenomenon feel very real and widespread.

but on a more serious one: marques bownlee made a level headed video on this: he noticed only 2 basic tasks like opening the door and bringing a cup to the kitchen were done automatically in the clip, everything else shown in the clip was a remote controlled robot. it’s ai needs to learn A LOT of things, like different fabrics, how to stack dishwashers, how to even differentiate forks from knives… now every household has it’s individual items and so on. he compared it to teslas self driving which was actively beta tested by the users and learned this way. but roads are far less complex than a household. and tesla works because they sold millions of cars while this robot will be a 20.000$ beta test for a small amount of people and it has to learn a lot of different thinks on a significantly smaller userbase. then there’s privacy: you have a walking robot in your household which records stuff and sends the data to a server outside of the user’s control.
basically it’s a tech bro pipedream.

i think when the scope of the answer goes beyond “type iwctl -> station wlan0 scan -> station wlan0 connect [SSID]” it can become civil :) but this is purely subjective. and i don’t want to claim i never encounter assholes.
