Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•The time and expense of commuting is theft, if that job can be done from home.English
1·3 months agoChoose a house with 1 extra room, courtesy of your WFH savings.
An itemized cost paid straight by your employer will have the effect of encouraging them to waste less of your time with a commute. They might try to hire locally, might pay for moving expenses, might keep you out of rush hour traffic, might be worried about keeping you late such that now you’re driving on overtime, might actually align their concerns with the planet’s by reducing all the oil going literally up in flames to transport people around to do knowledge work in a cubicle.

Technology@lemmy.world•China cut itself off from the global internet on WednesdayEnglish
11·3 months agoNot HTTPS necessarily, but lots use TLS over 443. If you are sending something like login credentials to an online service, it makes sense for the servers to use what is universally available instead of reinventing the wheel. Also, some games may use a launcher that uses HTTPS if they are web-based in some fashion, or maybe the game will use it for certain kinds of API calls unrelated to actual gameplay.
If you are playing a game that uses a dedicated server (or just isn’t a competitive game at all), then TLS usage is probably unlikely, but those games aren’t lucrative for the account boosting/currency farming that makes cheating so rampant in China anyway.
Even signing up for some games requires you to create an account on their website first.

6·2 years agoThese guys weren’t against wearing diapers to begin with. They were at least curious about it, or even desperate to finally try it in public. Maybe being out as their true selves will help them develop emotionally a bit. I support more MAGAs wearing their diapers in public spaces.

Immigration is slow for skilled workers in fields with high demand. For someone who is “studying” and has no skills, it would take years to get a work visa legally, if even possible at all. I agree that you will probably never see this man in your house, and are more at risk of your mom sending money to a scammer who disappears once he collects all he can.
In the event that this legitimately progresses further than what everyone else’s advice covers, then you may need to get child protective services involved if any of your siblings are younger than you. Bringing a non-resident into your country, and potentially boarding them in a shared room with minor children? CPS is not going to look at that in a positive light. Even if it is legal for her to help this person in some capacity, CPS might spook your mom back to her senses before it can get to that point.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Finally deleted my reddit account after the AI news. What communities do you recommend on lemmy?
2·2 years agoBingo. No need to ask for permission, no rate limits, documentation/source accessible. I would have zero surprise to find out some engineer from an AI corp had made some pull requests to fix bugs or performance issues that would be mutually beneficial for us users and their collectors.
