I wouldn’t really trust Intel CPUs after the degradation issues they were having. It will take a while to prove that it’s been fixed.
I would like RS-232 and RS-485 modules and a full size SD card reader would be nice too. It’s probably something I would end up building myself if I get a Framework laptop.
Edit: It looks like they have an SD card module now, nice.
That’s the way to do it. I just wish Framework had a better selection of modules available and had more module bays on their laptops.
Almost everything I have has a USB A or a DE-9 plug. I don’t have a single peripheral that plugs into a USB C port. I don’t want to deal with dongles and I’m certainly not going to replace my perfectly good hardware.
Don’t use btrfs if you need RAID 5 or 6.
The RAID56 feature provides striping and parity over several devices, same as the traditional RAID5/6. There are some implementation and design deficiencies that make it unreliable for some corner cases and the feature should not be used in production, only for evaluation or testing. The power failure safety for metadata with RAID56 is not 100%.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a public WiFi network with IPv6 enabled. I usually just use the hotspot on my phone to access my server since my cell carrier provides IPv6. I do have a VPN as a backup though.
Seriously, only 2 USB ports on a high end ,17" laptop? That’s nowhere near enough.
Single board computers have GPIO and interfaces like SPI and I2C. They also tend to have lower power consumption and can run from 5 volts. If you want to interface with low level hardware or run from batteries, the SBC will usually be the better choice.
$350 gets you a pretty decent PC. That’s a ridiculous price for a thin client that requires a subscription to use.
The other option is to use hardware from any other company.
There is only a single 3.5mm output jack and 1 mic input on the back of it. The optical output doesn’t have enough bandwidth for 5.1 PCM, so you have to use lossy compression to get surround sound from it. That also adds latency unless you’re watching a movie with AC3 or DTS audio that can be passed through.
You still have to get a separate sound card for this unless you only want stereo output.
It’s impressive that anything could run in 4K with the GPU connected by a single lane of PCIe 2.0 and the CPU translating X86 code to ARM. Maybe a future Raspberry Pi version will actually have enough power and bandwidth to make it somewhat practical.
Considering that there was an assassination attempt there not that long ago, it’s not surprising they increased security.
I would get a recertified enterprise drive from Server Part Deals. Drives in the 12-18TB range currently have the best price per TB. Be sure to get a SATA drive if it’s going in a desktop.
That box is way too small. My cable and charger stash is at least 10 times bigger than that.

It would be nice if they would make one with 4 or more LAN ports with at least one of them 2.5G and no WiFi. I need multiple access points to get enough coverage. The built in WiFi is useless to me since it won’t integrate nicely with Unifi.
