I get it. That’s why I included the part about “the family tech guy”. And I think some sparkle of interest must be had in order to learn about that stuff. Or any stuff, like learning Ancient Greek. One has to be able to use a web search (or write a prompt to an LLM) for “beginner install linux” or some such. If the spark isn’t there, maybe buying a new Windows/Mac is the correct way to go.

Not sure there is a joke in there. For some reason the question kind of surprises you and you have to quickly decide on the spot whether to have the receipt or not. So you end up winging it, sometimes having it, sometimes not.

Nowadays, I mostly decline but on occasion still end up agreeing, so I can relate.

  • Also the “we’re setting things up for you” or whatever user-dumb-hide-details crap the Teams PWA throws on your screen while launching is just… As if there was a live team of engineers carefully configuring your current Teams instance so that it starts up right. (A bit off-topic, but current trend of software “speaking to users in patronising manner” is annoying af. Unless it’s up to or exceeding HAL-3000 level, it should be abolished.)
