There are tons of listing for cheap Mac’s on marketplace now. Even Mac studios. The mini M4 is a very good deal. Super happy with mine.
Don’t tell him about building an unRAID server on a PC. It’s a rabbit hole your dad will love.
Can scale it from cheap used hardware to top of the line server hardware.
I started mine with retired PC hardware and have upgraded it to used commercial server hardware and it’s rock solid with more storage than my office server at work. 😂. The ultimate tinkering platform.
Set mine up as well. Marvellous piece of kit. Quite affordable for what you get.
I’ve heard it doesn’t due to Apple restrictions on the new operating systems for Apple silicon but I’ve never tried it myself.
Ifixit accomplished it. Required another Mac to reinstall the OS.
Apple decided they want memory modules that only contain memory because the storage controller is on their own silicon and they have direct low level access to the storage chips if they do it themselves. Probably cheaper (for them) without redundant controller parts they don’t need too.
Surprised nobody has reverse engineered this yet to make compatible upgrade modules. Probably not enough money in it. Edit: there’s a kickstarter for some homebrew modules which seem to work but they’re still pretty expensive.
I just got mine with 1TB. I added a second external SSD for a bit more space. Good enough for me. The only issue is that I can’t point the Dropbox app at the external drive. The new one has to point to the user home folder (guess I could move all of that to the external drive).
Already got my shipping notification. Thankfully work is footing the bill but it’s not unreasonably expensive for the value it provides me at work.
Missing in headline. “Developer beta”
This is the sort of not on device service that is very valuable.
A family member of mine was lucky to survive on a boating trip in a remote area when their canoe overturned and they had to continue on with wet clothes in cold weather. Fortunately they found a remote house to call for help. If this type of service was available they could’ve just waited safely for help.
I don’t believe Apple will ever charge for this. If someone was to die from not having a service plan it would be a PR disaster and it’s not a huge cost for them if they have a decent partnership agreement.
I’m still salty they killed aperture. It was amazing photo library management software for pros. Photos is just consumer level trash.
In before stupid people whine about power button on bottom.
No 27”? Hard pass.
Welcome to the Luddite convention here.
People who lead easy lives complain for the sake of complaining. I bet you nobody at war is worried about it at all.
16 Pro max here. It is not a significant problem.
I started hating photos but have come around a bit.

Why would anyone believe a single thing that fat old orange felon grifter has ever claimed to say. He’s a compulsive liar.
A new OS release is the worst time to complain about battery life.
There are tons of background tasks, indexing and AI things happening in the background that users are unaware of.
Give it a few weeks to index and optimize and see how it runs.
Collin is wrong. Parts pairing totally kills the illegal parts market and I absolutely love that. Make stolen stuff utterly useless for criminals to eliminate the demand.
I love the new one where parts can be transplanted if the phone is not activation locked though.
