mercano@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why Shouldn't I Use A Small Gaming PC5·6 days agoAh, well, it does have a desktop mode, but it’s Linux + KDE, not Windows. It can probably do what you want, but it would be some adjustment to the new environment.
mercano@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why Shouldn't I Use A Small Gaming PC73·6 days ago+1 on the Steam Deck train. I’ve been in the hospital the last few days, it’s been a godsend, playing Silksong between doctor visits.
You can get a dock if you want a full sized monitor or a real mouse & keyboard. The deck also has two trackpads, which is sufficient for slower mouse games like city builders while in handheld mode.
Because Valve is selling a lot of Decks, game developers are starting to use it as a watermark for low-end performance when tuning their games.
I will admit the Deck’s CPU is a few years old, you can probably get a faster portable if you really want, but SteamOS makes things pretty easy. Technically I can drop the Deck into desktop mode with a Linux KDE environment, but I can’t remember the last time I had to. Maybe when I was trying Minecraft?
Looks like some former USSR countries in Eastern Europe, like Ukraine or Lithuania, use +3 country codes. Was this always the case or was it changed after the dissolution of the USSR?

I wouldn’t mind going back to a System 7 era UI. There’s a little bit of color, but it’s not all gradients and reflections.

They’re very distinctive calls. It stands out whenever some sound designer adds one of them to a jungle scene or somewhere else it doesn’t belong just to make it sound “wild.”

mercano@lemmy.worldto Fuck AI@lemmy.world•Musk Threatens To Sue Apple So Grok Can Get Top App Store Ranking19·1 month agoApple is generally allowed to do business, or not to do business, with whomever they want. If they were promoting their own AI over an outside competitor’s, they may be subject to an anti competition lawsuit, but if you’re saying OpenAI is paying Apple to promote ChatGPT, then your complaint would be against OpenAI. If you’re saying Apple is recommending ChatGPT on their own volition, well, then, that’s their First Amendment right.
Can’t believe I’m defending Apple promoting ChatGPT, but, really, I’m saying Musk probably has a baseless case that’s going to do nothing but make the lawyers rich.
That’s not a very good job of redacting the names. The boxes aren’t fully opaque, I can read the names through them.
The first three Macs had this jack in the front for the keyboard and a PC-like serial port in the back for the mouse. With the Mac SE and II, the switched to ADB, which looked like a PS/2 port, but you could daisy chain your mouse, keyboard, and other inputs like tablets or joysticks all into one jack in the back of the computer.
In my day, the RJ-11 jack was for connecting the keyboard, not the phone line.
Early PC only had 5 card slots, and the only jack on the motherboard was the keyboard. One slot is going to be used by a video card, one’s probably being used by a hard drive controller, one’s probably used by a parallel + serial card. Soundcards also included controller ports to try to save a slot.
