  • +1 on the Steam Deck train. I’ve been in the hospital the last few days, it’s been a godsend, playing Silksong between doctor visits.

You can get a dock if you want a full sized monitor or a real mouse & keyboard. The deck also has two trackpads, which is sufficient for slower mouse games like city builders while in handheld mode.

Because Valve is selling a lot of Decks, game developers are starting to use it as a watermark for low-end performance when tuning their games.

I will admit the Deck’s CPU is a few years old, you can probably get a faster portable if you really want, but SteamOS makes things pretty easy. Technically I can drop the Deck into desktop mode with a Linux KDE environment, but I can’t remember the last time I had to. Maybe when I was trying Minecraft?

  • Apple is generally allowed to do business, or not to do business, with whomever they want. If they were promoting their own AI over an outside competitor’s, they may be subject to an anti competition lawsuit, but if you’re saying OpenAI is paying Apple to promote ChatGPT, then your complaint would be against OpenAI. If you’re saying Apple is recommending ChatGPT on their own volition, well, then, that’s their First Amendment right.

Can’t believe I’m defending Apple promoting ChatGPT, but, really, I’m saying Musk probably has a baseless case that’s going to do nothing but make the lawyers rich.

  • The first three Macs had this jack in the front for the keyboard and a PC-like serial port in the back for the mouse. With the Mac SE and II, the switched to ADB, which looked like a PS/2 port, but you could daisy chain your mouse, keyboard, and other inputs like tablets or joysticks all into one jack in the back of the computer.

  • Early PC only had 5 card slots, and the only jack on the motherboard was the keyboard. One slot is going to be used by a video card, one’s probably being used by a hard drive controller, one’s probably used by a parallel + serial card. Soundcards also included controller ports to try to save a slot.
