Or, it could be that there’s like 300x more non-Aussies than Aussies so constraining the ability of foreigners to speculate on Australian real estate could be seen as a priority by an institution who’s literal job it is to serve the Australian people, first and foremost.
I did specify world view, did I not? A credible commitment to the rule of law, democracy, secular politics, and to the rules-based international order would be a start. I don’t think we should award citizenship to anyone who can’t even make lip service to these principles.
edit: smart selection process on the part of that German state actually. Screening out people who would deny Israel the right to exist probably also catches a lot of those who would fail some of the above requirements.
Good. I hope there are further tests of the applicants’ world view in place, but that’s a start.
I wouldn’t know, haven’t seen an ad on youtube in like 10 years.
A better job at what, getting you high? Pretty sure they already have that, and while it doesn’t net them 10k per dose the Sacklers would have liked that very much no doubt.
I’d probably ask for a much better metagenome assembler and binner. there’s enough groundwork and data out there with exponentially more created each year. If an AGI could compress the 20 or so PhD student-years needed to really leverage that into something outstanding into a few hours that would be really nice.
You gotta be able to acknowledge and discuss this stuff.
If the only way to advocate for climate action is to also try and turn people into pacifist commies, we can just stop trying.
edit: the laughable failure to understand basic human psychology in this thread, lmao
Which is a perfect proxy for me.
Eh, I don’t know, I’m not yet convinced mind uploading is philosophically unproblematic. I’d rather get as much use as possible out of the ol’ meat mecha before considering that.
some scifi universe where they hand out anti aging perfect health pills like tic tacs. That would probably be a pretty interesting place to check out for some time. If it’s an innate ability to travel and I don’t have to worry about getting stuck in a universe, I’d probably want to check out some questions like “what if the Roman empire collapsed way earlier?” or “what if someone killed Hitler as a child?” or “what if religion didn’t have such an appeal to people?” (though I suspect I’d be going back to the first universe with the last question).
I take selfish and nihilistic but not sadistic. I don’t enjoy the fact that animals suffer for my enjoyment. It just doesn’t bother me all that much. It’s just part of life.
I wonder who is your target audience for posts like this. People who made the choice to eat meat on the basis of rational deliberation but are missing some key facts?
Pretty much everyone hopefully knows that meat is not great for the environment, is more wasteful to produce simply due to thermodynamics, that red meat is not very healthy, and that the ethics of eating meat are pretty clear cut.
We just don’t care cause it’s tasty as fuck. No amount of facts and sound ethical arguments will make a steak not taste amazing.
edit: for what it’s worth, I don’t care if they put warnings on meat. Doesn’t make it any less tasty.
why linux will never be a viable solution on the desktop
Has been pretty viable for me for the last 7 years or so.
why self hosting will never take off
Literally who cares, the community stands to gain nothing from another few million novice users who don’t even know or care to learn how to formulate a question or usable bug report.
The more pessimistic (already prior to this report unlikely!) projections of climate change are conditional on sustained heavy investment and development of fossil energy sources, which seems to me would make little sense if the alternative is significantly cheaper. So there’s now an even lower chance we’re in one of those truly apocalyptic timelines.
According to estimates, PV including battery storage will be the cheapest energy source to develop for nearly every country in the world by the 2030s. Surely even the most determined doomsayers won’t go so far as to say we’ll “kill the planet” until then.
If only I knew…
I was recently on holiday where most of the other guests in our hotel were 50-70 year old Germans.
The breakfast buffet at our hotel had a large scale coffee maker which could do some surprisingly good freshly ground coffee. What it could also do is spit instant coffee into your mug and pour hot water on top.
In two weeks I never saw someone (other than me) draw anything but fucking instant coffee from that thing.
well played.
