This is probably more of a Lemmy specific thing than what’s normal on this community, but I posted on a community from lemmy.ml and the mods there banned me from the community.

They didn’t remove my post or message me about it. I only found out because when I was going through replies, I couldn’t reply and I noted that my account is banned from that community.

I wasn’t saying anything untoward or encouraging anyone to do anything illegal or anything like that. It was a comment about systems of government. I don’t believe I put any emphasis on whether one was better than another, but the post was in a non-political community; so it should not lean one way or the other on the matter, and the post I was replying to introduced the political discussion, so I was on-topic.

The specifics aren’t super important. What I want to know is whether there’s a built-in system to inquire with the mods or something to try to get an official reply as to what rules they believe I had broken to deserve a ban, and whether that ban is permanent or not. I tried simply messaging one of the mods, but it’s been hours with no reply.

Is there any way to find the information? Previously on Reddit, I would almost always get a message from the subreddit about what happened, what violation caused it, and allowed me to message the mods to try to argue my case, though, me getting banned on that platform was quite rare. This is my first time knowingly being removed like this and I don’t understand the process here.

Can anyone enlighten me about how these things are supposed to work on Lemmy?

    Head over to lemmy.ml (in a browser) click on ‘mod log’ at the bottom and search your name.

    There’s another 20ish communities on lemmy.ml you’ve been banned from at the same time for the same reason.

        I think there’s a few mods on .ml that misunderstood some of my posts and now have a grudge against me so they basically ban me on sight.

        Any explanations or anything I say about it after the fact, regardless of what I say, only serves to make them dislike me more. I don’t get it.

        The last time I even engaged with one of them, I looked at the profile and the person had a very religious profile. Instead of bothering to continue discussing with them, I blocked them. Bluntly, if you’re so deep into brainwashing that your entire personality is your religion, it’s probably not worth my time to talk to you.

        I have zero issue with people who are religious, right up until they preach at me, or try to impose their morality on others by law. You can believe, but don’t force everyone else to believe whatever you do.

        IDK. At this point I’m considering blocking pretty much every community on Lemmy.ml just to avoid the toxicity I’ve experienced there.

        They didn’t express a grade school level understanding of political science or below, which is a requirement for posting on Lemmy.ml

      Makes sense. Seems like the mods over there are a bit too judgemental for my taste.

    Lemmy.ml, hexbear, and lemmygrad are the biggest tankie instances out there. If you aren’t praising authoritarian dictators non-stop you’ll be eating a ban in no time. Count it as a badge of honor and just block the whole instance :>

      I ended up going to my settings and just banning the whole instance. So I don’t accidentally end up posting on their insane instance. I honestly don’t understand them. I won’t continue to try to figure it out. Problem solved? I guess?

    This doesn’t answer your question, but I think that I would seriously ask whether you want to spend the time and angst on trying to be on said communities.

    There are a lot of people that complain about banning policies of various communities on lemmy.ml; I see posts like yours on a semi-regular basis.

    If this is !worldnews@lemmy.ml, which is a particularly noisy source of friction, there is another large world news community at !world@lemmy.world.

    I’ve never been banned, but I don’t subscribe to communities on .ml. There’s plenty of content elsewhere.

      I don’t believe I’m subscribed to the instance, or any of the communities there. I might be wrong.

      In any case, I’ll likely audit all of my subscriptions to scrub them from that list, and I’ll likely also be going through the communities on .ml and just block all of them so they don’t appear on my “all” feed (which is how I frequently end up on there).

      I’m over it. I don’t care what those people think of me. I have a pretty low opinion on the mods over there at this point.

      It just causes too much stress in my life.

        Ah, fair enough. I normally just view “subscribed” communities; “whitelist” rather than “blacklist”. Every now and then, I’ll hit lemmyverse.net or so and see if there are interesting-looking new communities.

    Those mods are fragile and allergic to facts. They love state capitalist authoritarian countries and are emotionally unable to cope with anyone who disagrees. You very likely did nothing wrong whatsoever other than participating in objective reality instead of refusing to succumb to the delusional thinking they require.

      This explanation seems the most accurate to me.

      When posting I try to take a more balanced, neutral approach, mainly dealing with objective facts and trying to keep my opinions and biases to myself, unless otherwise stated.

      I’ll discuss most anything, and a surprising number of things have merit, if you’re speaking from a very neutral/balanced/unbiased perspective. Unfortunately, people often take my statements on things as support of those things, and that’s not the case at all.

      Merely pointing out the benefits of say, communism, doesn’t make me a communist, nor should it imply that I think communism is better than another system. This is just one example.

    Lemmy.ml is the most insanely fragile instance on Lemmy and they will ban you for not sucking Stalin’s boot hard enough. I would not spend much time thinking about it.
