Genuine question.
My post had -15 votes on that instance for asking if a user can get banned on Reddit because he banned me on a sub just for speaking Russian
I dunno but I always get the impression that these fucking people that are too cool for school and need to loudly tell everyone how little they care about downvotes every chance they get, are probably also the people that go around using downvotes in bad faith and making the platform a little less welcoming for everyone.
My advice would probably be to just stay away from instances that are populated with the kind of people that use downvotes as a ‘disagree’ button or panic button to make themselves feel better when reading something they don’t understand. Those were always the worst people on Reddit that dragged the experience down for everyone. And it sucks that they’re all here too. And in a smaller pond, they’re going to be making a bigger splash.
I’d find a nice instance and / or communities to spend 90% of my time in and only actually go to places like Ask Lemmy in world when you actually feel like dealing with smart alecs and neckbeards.
Edit: and downvoting people for talking about downvotes isn’t actually funny, it’s just proof that you use downvotes for the wrong reasons. For the meme and ‘disagree’ button.
Did you read the rules of that community?
W.r.t. Reddit specifically… a lot of people fucking hate Reddit and would rather not help you use that platform - that likely attracted a fair number of downvotes.
More generally, you’re asking if another platform can do X - yes they can, they’re another platform… we’re not the deciders of what Reddit can and can’t do.
Additionally, I personally, at least, hate commenting on questions about bans or evading bans because sometimes bans are well deserved and I’ll never know enough about the situation to be comfortable giving actual advice.
Lastly, I think a fair number of users prefer nice open ended questions and that one isn’t really beneficial to the community to spur an interesting discussion… instead it feels more like something a websearch would give you relatively reasonable answers without requiring time or effort from other lemmings.
Oh… and this question is being downvoted because discussions of downvotes are boring and karma isn’t a thing here.
Sorry if these experiences aren’t a nice introduction but I think the wider answer is that this community is a mismatch for both your original and follow up question.
One thing I’ve observed, commenting about downvotes tends to get you downvotes. Did once on a shower thoughts thing I commented on and I edited thinking people where actually pissed, ended up with around 3X as many after the edit. 😄
Agreed
I would also ban you for writing in a language I can’t comprehend. It’s hard to grasp the nuance when you don’t understand the language, and it’s hard to moderate if you can’t understand the nuance.
You would ban because you don’t understand? That’s wild.
Ohh ok, tysm
Wouldn’t that be too harsh? They could get a notice, like can you switch to english because of rules?
OP says she got a message that literally said it was because they don’t like Russia/the culture, oddly
Yeah
