The US government is gigantic and does a lot beyond what most people see in a day to day basis.
The visible part of DoE is energy conservation and developing alternative energy sources. It turns out the DoE does a lot more and they didn’t realize this before promising to destroy the department.

So a hair under 20 years ago I was offered a position similar to this after leaving the Navy. I’m so glad I went into private industry in another field entirely.
