  • Every time I get downvoted, I move an inch closer to the exit door of this community.

    Lol OK bye.

Nobody gives a shit and complaining about down votes is the quickest way to get them.

Guess what! Outside of a few custom instances that for some reason want to be reddit, the fediverse doesn’t track your total karma.

Unless you’re going back to keep track of your comments for some weird reason, the only time you see a down voted comment is when you get replies.

I could have hundreds of net down votes by now, but I don’t know because luckily my instance doesn’t track votes.

The point is, it’s a little number next to an arrow. Who gives a shit.

  • I had to fiddle with my own on my old laptop, I used one of the plethora of github scripts, but then they changed the api to limit access to (I think) about 100/min, so I just changed the delays to 1000ms so it would only delete 60/min.

Took two weeks, but I still haven’t seen any old content pop back up outside of archives and quotes from other comments in the thread.

I search for a couple random things I remember saying on ddg/bing/Google whenever I think about it, so far nothing.

As I’ve said before about certain countries, you know your platform is doing well when you (essentially) tell people “No, sorry, you can’t leave.”

  • My 6th grade teacher did exactly this, but went beyond normal nicknames and said if there’s ANYTHING you want to be called she would use that name instead. Granted, every teacher before that would hear the nicknames and just use them anyway, but this one went a step beyond that.

Not a single kid used their birth name. Some used regular nicknames, some used their parents nickname for them, and some chose something else. I went the cringier route and chose “silent hill because I like that game and I’m usually quiet” and sure enough she called me that all year. Had the nicknames down by the end of the week and still knew each child’s real name for when she’s talking to other adults.

I don’t see what the big deal is with using someone’s preferred name. Legitimately the only reason to not use it in this context is to be a piece of shit.

  • Another anecdote for the “Springs Be Scary” list, I was helping my brother in law put theirs up two years ago, and similarly had trouble with the last spring.

We were using the tool included in the packaging, a little T post handle with a small hook on the end, sort of like one of those livestock processing hooks they use to grab heavy things with, just a lot smaller. And not sharp.

Well the last spring was being pulled back when the metal hook broke out of the handle, and shot into the nearby house window and broke one of the bottom panes.

Nobody was hurt, but with all the kids excitedly sprinting around, that metal bit was flying at eye level to 3 or 4 of them… Someone could have lost an eye.

Springs under load are scary as fuck, ask any garage door tech.

  • You know, as much as I hate it… “you know it when you see I but hard to definet” really is accurate.

There’s plenty of things that aren’t outright illegal that are completely inappropriate around children.

And if there are things that are context specific, it gets a lot harder to make a computer recognize a problem.

Audio cues are easy to scan for and computers are pretty good at recognizing sounds, especially in regards to copyright detection (even if their interpretation of “fair use” clause is still fucked 6 ways)

Video is a lot harder unless the computer is trying to match direct images (it’s a lot easier to recognize a still frame from The Avengers when it’s uploaded full size than it is to recognize a slightly warped, smaller cropped version with someone in front of it commenting on the video)
