It is also the origin of the anime “wow” sound effect. https://soundeffects.fandom.com/wiki/Anime_Wow_Sound
VR - It has been through a few hype cycles, but never quite makes it. Cost, weight, battery life (or tethers), lack of highly desirable games, required floor space, nausea (in some people), etc.
Starlink - when announced it sounded like the solution to ISP monopolies and rural broadband access. But the roll out was so slow that other solutions have caught up. For people with no option other than satellite internet, it is still great (if they can get it) but for a lot of people, better options now exist.
One second ago I put a dollar on my dresser. That’s on pace to be 30 million in a year.
Hot dog buns. In my opinion, the generic, white, store brand buns make the best hot dogs.
Instant karma. Weighted based on intent. E.g. If CEO cuts benefits to improve his stock value, then his balls explode. If a driver accidentally cuts someone off but feels bad about it, a full mosquito hits the windshield.
Happily married, with a brand new baby, living in a large house, on a well established farm, with financial security and steady income, plus a small fortune in extremely valuable wine aging in the basement, near a friendly town with lots of festivities, where no matter how badly I screw up someone will find me and bail me out so that I can get home or see a doctor.
I’m still hoping for good customer support AI. If I’m going to be connected to someone who barely speaks English and is required to follow a prewritten script, or worse plays prerecorded messages to fake being fluent, I might as well talk to an AI, especially if it means shorter hold times.
AI is a bad replacement for good customer service, but it could be an improvement over bad customer service.
Settings itself has been around in one form or another since at least Win95. 29 years…
Settings in Windows 11 is close. I rarely find myself going to control panel when it was about 50/50 in Windows 10. Still more clicks than I would like but workable.
Clearly the sphinxes are the remains of the ancient true cats that were turned to stone by space radiation after the real trees were cut down.
I was waiting for: dear sandwich theif, this is IT. We have the printer logs. HR brought us donuts. Your move.
They’ve overhyped the hell out of it and slapped those letters on everything including a lot of half baked ideas. Of course people are tired of it and beginning to associate ai with bad marketing.
This whole situation really does feel dotcommish. I suspect we will soon see an ai crash, then a decade or so later it will be ubiquitous but far less hyped.
Mine has air conditioning so I prefer to stay inside except for the random 5 days we get for fall. I hear they will be in December this year.
What if we just count all the nanoseconds since 1601 and divide by 100.
I still don’t get that timestamp approach. Especially after learning how unix/linux handle it…
At least modern AD tools can automatically do the date conversions now.
If not for the BASIC examples in the old 3-2-1 contact kids magazines that I discovered worked on my elementary schools Apple II computers and then later QBASIC, I have no idea what I would be doing in life.
That was my gateway to a greater interest in computers and an eventual job in IT. And. I will always respect BASIC for it.
Volcanos being caused by overpopulation in hell.
