I live in a region with vast amounts of renewable energy resources. It’s always windy and the sun shines almost every day. I have solar panels on my house that cover most of my DHW and a large fraction of my summer cooling load, and keep most of my appliances running.
But right now, the sun is down and the wind is flat. And I still need power. My battery storage would be depleted by morning, damaging it through overdischarge if I don’t buy power from the grid instead.
And it’s a lovely summer evening with no heating or cooling demand! What about midwinter, -35C and dark and snowy? Where is my power coming from on that day, after a month of days just like it?

The simple solution sounds like it should be shipping more panels to the rest of the world?

I’ve actually just been working with OCR this week, trying to capture data off of the screen of a stupid proprietary Schneider device as that’s the only way to get at it.
Long story short Tesseract stinks at this task.
The Chinese designed PaddleOCR seems significantly superior as it runs a more modern neural net and requires a lot less preprocessing. I would class it as more of a “full service AI” and not just a simple recognition system like Tesseract, it can correct for skew and do its own normalization and thresholding internally while Tesseract wants a perfect boolean raster fed to it.
Unfortunately, the barrier to entry is a lot higher due to trying to understand their text vomit website and the fact that it seems prone to random segfaulting.
I think this is what makes Fallout a love it or hate it setting.
Fallout tells often whimsical stories against the horrific backdrop of nuclear annihilation, and that’s what gives it it’s charm IMO.
I actually feel like it’s more realistic in a sense than overly grimdark settings. People are goofy, and with over 200 years since the bombs fell it’s believable that people will have some laughs and some motivations other than pure survival.
Off road gasoline is rare and varies by district, here in Canada I grew up in BC and we had “purple gas” and “red diesel” but purple gas was only sold at very specific stations, usually near parks where people would put it in ATVs and boats.
Now I live in SK and we only have “dyed diesel” which is your standard red farm stuff. You can get a discount on gasoline delivered to a farm tank, but there’s no colorant added and almost nobody does it anyways, since gasoline goes stale and isn’t used in farm equipment.
Myself I converted my remaining gasoline equipment to propane and run heating propane in it. The only gas burners left are lawnmowers, quads and a farm truck.
Could you run fossilized and sandboxed in a VM? I run Tiny10 for a couple Windows applications that can’t run on Wine, completely offline so that there’s no need for updates. The system continues to work exactly how I want it to with no Microsoft Surprises.
One of the applications is for tax filing, so I finish the taxes, clone the VM, put the copy online and file. After it gets confirmation, I copy the database back to the fossilized version and wipe the copy. Been doing it for years now.

I played 3 and NV on 360, both games were badly marred by being as much loading zone as they were game. Ruined the experience of snooping around for loot and side quests as opening a door back into the wasteland could take minutes. I had to stick to mostly the main quest.
4 was a far better “game” for being played on PC, but I agree NV plot was great. I just didn’t want to replay and get the different endings, as the game itself was painful to play.
I should replay them on PC someday, especially if there are graphical update mods available.

I still run an old version of Vanced for screen off radio style music in my truck, though I mostly stream from my own collection now with Ampache/Ultrasonic. I’ve done a ton of ripping lately with Zotify, it pulls down whole albums and discographies from Spotify in decent quality, and combined with Beets everything gets tagged perfectly.

Really, only the cow part is idiotic. Here in Canada, where all guns are supposed to be locked up all the time, every rural home still has a gun propped up somewhere out of sight for predator and pest control. When you look out the window and see a coyote dragging down a lamb or chomping on one of the barn cats you don’t have time to go unlock your rifle from the safe. I’ve grabbed my gun many times for this exact purpose. I don’t keep it loaded, but the magazine is nearby and I slap it in and open fire.
