There are dozens of amazing apps for Lemmy.

Whether you’re on a mobile device running Android or iOS, using a dedicated desktop app, or one of the great web apps, there are a lot to choose from. Some have been around for years and still see active development like Voyager or Lemmy UI (the default web app on most instances). Some are newer to the scene but have compelling features that make them appealing.

Some apps are blazing fast, some have personalized recommendations, some have an impeccable interface, some have advanced features for content moderation.

It’s tricky to know which apps are getting the most use, or what features you haven’t heard about. What are the thoughtful details you love in your top app? Feel free to tag the devs to show them some love!

There is almost too much choice with Lemmy apps to make an easy decision. I mostly use Jerboa on Android. I prefer a free app, as in beer, and the interface is nice and clean. It also has a nice trade-off between the size of the text when looking at multiple posts in compact view and the size of the text when looking at a single post and the replies underneath it. Some of the other apps I tried the text size while changeable, can be either too big or too small for one or the other.

I didn’t choose based on the app’s features.

    I chose based on:

    • how much data the app collects
    • the size of the app

Voyager collected no data and occupied the least space back when I installed it.

I use !summit@lemmy.world. It has keyword filters for posts and comments, handy for triggers. It also has a history function so I can search for a post I saw earlier easily. It displays everything pretty perfectly, you aren’t going to have problems like spoilers not displaying correctly. It was one of the first apps to get moderator tools, so you can check reports. You can also tag users. There’s a lot of customization options and gestures. And all of it is free and the app is still being updated with an active dev.

    Well, sync, despite its flaws.

See, I prefer to use a tablet for my lemmy use, just like I did for reddit.

And when you’re on a tablet, a single column feed is just a waste of space. Double column in portrait is just smoother and more efficient for both scrolling and reading posts. Triple column works better in landscape, but if you comment as much as I do, typing is easier on a tablet in portrait.

So, even if an app is better in other ways, the only apps so far that have multi column views are the ones that used to be reddit apps: boost, sync, and eternity.

Of those, sync is the better visually. More room between cards, better theming options in terms of visibility of cards vs background, etc. So I’ll keep using it until it breaks entirely, then likely switch to eternity until it breaks. Boost’s column view isn’t good for scrolling text posts, though it’s better for images only. way too little space in between cards, less flexibility in theming too.

It is the killer feature for me.

Voyager on iOS for me. It’s free, got a ton of great features, is constantly updated, and reminds me of the days using Apollo.

I tried a few and settled on Arctic on iOS. It’s got a great interface that gets out of your way but is still feature rich including swipe actions on posts and comments and a solid push notification system, and the developer is super responsive to feedback, pushing new TestFlight builds consistently with both features and bug fixes. It’s not perfect (there’s a stubborn bug that jumps posts that pops up on and off throughout builds) but it’s the closest in feel to Apollo for me.

Primarily Boost, but also Raccoon. Unfortunately something has happened with the development of Raccoon and I am getting the feel that it is abandoned now.

Recently there is no engagement in the community. May be it is all happening elsewhere. Previously the developers were actively engaging with the community and bug fixes were quick.
