I’ve been watching videos related to the GTA series. Obviously, a video game series where violence, sex, and drugs are major themes. But YouTubers won’t say words like “kill”, “die”, “murder”, “sex”, “dildo”, “cocaine”, “cannabis” etc etc.

They either use euphemisms or just show the thing on the screen without saying what it actually is. A dildo is a “plastic eggplant” and killing someone is “unaliving” them. Cocaine is “white powder”.

I’m aware it’s related to the algorithm and demonetisation. But I’m so sick of sanitised internet. A video about a game for adults is presented like it’s for children or teens.

The worst part is people just talking like this now, probably without even thinking about it. Even my dad says unalive and pewpew now…

be angry at youtube for making content creators self censor.

    your anger is entirely misplaced.

This is the down side to hosting videos on someone else’s computer. It’s Google’s computers, so it’s Google’s rules. And those rules mean self censoring or being demonetized. If you really don’t like the rules, you can always start your own video sharing site, with blackjack and hookers. I know I’ve seen a few of the channels I watch mentioning just that sort of thing. I personally subscribed to Nebula years ago, because I wanted to support that sort of content. And I’ve considered joining other sites, but haven’t been willing to put the money into it yet. If you want a better site, you have to put your money where your mouth is.

Ultimately, if you don’t like Google’s rules, stop supporting them by using Youtube. If enough people are willing to leave the platform that the ad revenue dries up, Google will kill that too.

I hate it too. Speaking as someone who has a lot of trauma but isn’t typically triggered by stuff online, I find the censoring weirdly triggering in a way that the words by themselves are not. It makes it impossible to address the stigma that many survivors of awful stuff face, and makes it harder to hold people accountable

Maybe it’s worse because your brain is forced to translate the euphemism rather than pass over the word.

You should try gun related content. Some of the things left out for fear of a ban makes a video useless. People have been unsure if they can show you how to reassemble a gun! Well fuck me, that’s largely what I’m there for. I just want to know how to get this antique shotgun back together.

The rules are so wishy washy, YT could use them to block any gun content.

Please note this is not a complete list.

    Yeah. See what I mean?

They damned near banned Hickok45, and at one point I believe they removed all his past videos but have since restored them. Know why? Because he was showing the ammo brand he was using and telling who sent it to him. “Selling guns!” If you’re not into shooting, ammo selection is kinda important to know.

FFS, he’s a kindly old man, retired school teacher, basically your grandpa demonstrating how various guns work and/or compare. This is his retirement gig. No politics, yet he’s no MAGA, just an old guy showing some guns with humor.

Not all of them do. There’s a good handful of creators who make videos for mature audiences, even going as far as letting YouTube put up a warning that viewers have to click to acknowledge that this video contains mature content.

But even those videos have to abide by these dumb rules set out by YouTube. YouTube may not remove your video, but they will make it difficult for your video to be seen, even to your subscribers. So creators of any content, including those who solely make it for mature adult audiences, “have” to use this language to skirt YouTube’s dumb rules.

It’s got to be a target audience thing right? I watch plenty of rimworld on YouTube those words come up casually as part of gameplay and the videos do fine for those channels
