It’s great for backbone and public address space - and maybe in enterprise, but there it’s a costly transition that won’t happen immediately. Things will change as hardware ages out and is replaced.

New infrastructure will be mostly IP6.

And when people leave the office, their machines will connect to, and transit IP4 networks, so they’ll still need to address how everything works over IP4 (say VPN connections, any hardware/software that’s still IP4 dependent in the data centers, etc).

Everywhere I’ve worked (many very large companies, banks, telecom, outsourced IT, etc) teams have coverage schedules, so I suspect this article is misleading.

Someone has to mind things 24/7, this is done via scheduling.

And the more critical you are, the more on-call you are. I had one role where I was on call 24/7. Things rarely broke enough for me to be called, but I never once resented when I was called. I’d rather get woken up at 2am because my help is needed than have the risk that our systems aren’t ready for the day.

Though they’ve been building nuclear plants with the help of Russia, because nuclear makes fucking sense. But the powers that be in the US have supported the green movement to block nuclear growth and keep us on petro, playing both sides against each other.

Professional self-hosting was the way it was done until SaaS took off over the last 20 years - we just never called it that, because it was the only way to do things at the time.

Now we say things like Cloud or On-Premise. And as another commenter proposed, call it “Private Cloud” to sound fancy (wel, it’s not the same thing, but it sure sounds good!).

To my thinking, self-hosting means consumer-level hosting of services for a person, family, friends, generally at home, with VPS as an alternative server host.
