I think it has to do with data differences between self hosters and data hoarders.

Example: a self hosted with an RPI home assistant setup and a N100 server with some paperwork, photos, nextcloud, and a small jellyfin library.

A few terabytes of storage and their goal is to replace services they paid for in an efficient manner. Large data transfers will happen extremely rarely and it would be limited in size, likely for backing up some important documents or family photos. Maybe they have a few hundred Mbit internet max.

A data hoarder with 500TB of raid array storage that indexes all media possible, has every retail game sold for multiple consoles, has taken 10k RAW photos, has multiple daily and weekly backups to different VPS storages, hosts a public website, has >gigabit internet, and is seeding 500 torrents at a given time.

I would venture to guess that option 1 is the vast majority of cases in selfhosting, and 10Gb networking is much more expensive for limited benefit for them.

Now on a data hoarding community, option 2 would be a reasonable assumption and could benefit greatly from 10Gb.

Also 10Gb is great for companies, which are less likely to be posting on a self hosted community.

I am an electronics engineer, so admittedly only ever worked with C and Python scripting (and not a programmer by any means) but I literally stopped learning rust for embedded because every single tooling setup step was wrong or failed for both chips I was testing out (NRF chip and an esp32-C3). Maybe only embedded rust was still a mess tooling-wise, but I have no use case for learning userspace rust first. It would just be a waste of my limited free time 😅

Sorry, but this only applies to drills and sanding machines. Maybe a bench grinder also you can cheap out on. Hand tools are fine to cheap out on also.

Any spinning blade, if you cheap out, don’t be surprised if you get life-alteringly injured when you “use it enough to break it”. I was just helping some friends renovate where they had a dirt cheap miter saw and it was just about the most dangerous experience of my life.

If you are doing any big renovations, at least get makita, Milwaukee, or dewalt. You can get a TON of cheaper stuff second hand. Quality at a lower price. I got a professional older model hilti hammer drill at a tiny fraction of the price.

10x better than a dyson. Great attatchments, never clogs, very good particle filter, powerful as fuck, attachments have hair grabbing fabric used on old anti-lint brushes so scrubbing at spots matted with hair (dog on a welcome mat), everything is made of very thick plastic that won’t break off, head is fully rotatable (as long as the head fits under furniture, you can completely vacuum under).

We have even used it sucking up dust and stones in our renovation sometimes and it hasn’t affected it at all.

Bought 2 pairs of their normal socks (everyday/sport socks) because they advertised to keep your feet cool during the day. I decided to test them out before I bought a bunch as workout socks.

1 was completely ripped on the sides by literally the 3rd wear (2nd week I had them), only walking around the office a bit.

The other lasted 8 wears before it got a hole on the balls of my feet and was almost worn through on the sides (about 6 weeks), still not one workout done with then

By very far the worst socks I have ever owned. I didn’t get a chance to try their warranty because I moved out of the US, but hot damn I will always recommend against their thin socks, only go for the large tube/hiking/warm socks.

The difference is Amazon actually made a good software experience in the beginning few years and Epic spent literal years with very few feature updates and whining and burning money suing about “unfair market practices” when they were the only ones actually engaging in anti-consumer practices like paying off developers to be Epic-exclusive and buying developers and removing their games from steam. The other “different” thing that they did I guess is their CEO is an outspoken objective asshole.

They never got to the rug pull part because their actual software sucked balls and they refused to improve it so much so that someone else actually made a better launcher than them for their own products…

The problem I have with bug reports for things like docker containers (I will just use that example for now) is again documentation… I get that most people make really bad “it broke, fix it now” kind of reports with no detail, but unless you actually dig into and know the code, there is often almost no debugging documentation (github issue templates help with that when the devs make one)

Where are the logs? If you refuse to use the docker standard of pushing logs through the log api, don’t respect the LOG_LEVEL environment variable, errors are non-descriptive, and don’t provide documentation to where your logs are stored, how the hell can you expect users to provide relevant logs??

I have run into dozens of pretty big projects that fail with 0 log output and there is 0 log documentation and then the dev auto closes the issue because “not enough logs to help.” The only way to find the logs is to find an old issue where the dev has laid out where the relevant logs are, like WTF? No I am not going to spend an hour looking in every single part of the undocumented directory structure to see if there happen to be logs in there. Use the standard, document your log locations and what they log (no 3ch9qjV7.log is not descriptive enough), or don’t complain about not being able to help without logs.

Just got a 12TB a while ago and it is as quiet as my 4TB drives.

But for OP, just use software raid instead of hardware raid. There is very little point for homelabbers using hardware raid at this point without an existing setup.
