Hi all.
First, thanks for reading. I’m not exactly sure if this is the correct location to raise a concern about a ban/deletion, but I guess it’s as good as any.
So:
- I dont know which mod it was. Log is redacted?
- post deleted & banned from the News@Lemmy.world community
- screenshot of modlog attached
- screenshot of comment attached.
- It was an appreciated post with 106 upvotes 26 downvotes at deletion and several positive responses yesterday. When I came back today (I’m in Australia so timezones…) the comment was deleted and I was banned - and several negative comments have appeared which I would have liked to respond to.
Original post: a news article about Proton Mail.
My post: Essentially I took the time to read the article and included the quotes of what was written by the CEO that was being discussed in the article - as many in the comments had surprised me by jumping straight to him being a literal Nazi. As not a single other commenter had included the quotes to discuss the source, I thought that would be a valuable contribution. I also gave my opinions which you can see in the comment on the modlog, the formatting is messed up so I included a screenshot of the (recreated) comment. https://lemmy.world/modlog/1347
What I didn’t notice was that the article writer had omitted the first part of the Twitter post from the CEO in her quotation of him - so I quoted her, and in doing so missed the context that the CEO had actually started “Great pick by @realDonaldTrump” at the start - which does of course change the context of his Twitter post to praise. This was clarified for me in the angry responses. I would have edited my comment and owned my mistake, however stood by the rest of the comment regarding Proton’s official follow-up.
So, is that deletion and ban fair?
Update 10 hours later: contacted a mod directly to see if i can find out more about the ban or perhaps get it remedied.
Update 48 hours later: contacted the entire mod team, and got back feedback from several of them - all helpful. My post has now been undeleted, and my account unbanned from the News community 👍
A great outcome for this.
I gave each of the first 2 mods I contacted 24hrs to response, as I was concerned over a server-wide ban for ‘PM spamming’ or something. Having not heard back, I lost patience and sent PMs to entire mod team.
That got multiple positive responses back from five of the mods, a few of which commented that they couldn’t see why that would warrant deletion or ban. The mod that remedied it said he’d unban me immediately and take it to the mod team to discuss why the comment was deleted, ‘in case there were details they weren’t aware of’ (since the modlog was so bare). An hour later the comment had been undeleted too and multiple messages from mods sending apologies for the delay and hassle - so it looks like nobody saw an issue with the comment.
It was not made clear to me if it was an automod action, and it seemed like at least some of the mods can’t de-obfuscate the modlog either, because they asked me if I remember who made the ban (I obviously do not know). I did ask the mod who got my issue fixed, I’ll edit this comment if they have futher info. But for now I’m taking the win and getting on with using Lemmy.
Cheers all for the support and recommendations.

Sorry, I didn’t read this. But ultimately they’re just doing you a favor by removing you from that community, I don’t think it has a nice atmosphere in the first place. Just take this as an invitation to focus on something else. Practically anything is better than commenting on the news on lemmy.world.
Thats fine, i get it was long. Apprecitate the advice. If it doesn’t get restored i will move on from @lemmy.world entirely tbh. I dont feel like i posted something incredibly challenging, and it certainly broke none of the rules on that comm - so i was quite surprised at the ban and deletion as a ‘welcome to lemmy’ after lurking for a year or so.
It’s not the length. Well, not the length of your post.
It’s the length of exposure people have had to that community lol. You see it in a title or post here, you already know what the deal is. No need to read anything else
PTB.
But consider it a good thing for you.
.world is a toxic shithole and they remove anything that veers slightly from the echo-chamber. You’re much better off just blocking the instance and enjoying the rest of the fediverse.
If you decide to overlook it and stay, you’ll find shit will just keep getting removed. Do yourself a courtesy and join another instance.
PTB, .world is trash, nearly all other news communities are better.
Modlog
Ur welcome in !news_summary@lemmy.dbzer0.com .
Thanks, subscribed. And unsubscribed from news. Left Reddit partly due to shitty moderation, so not here to engage with communities rife with questionable mod actions
Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll check it out
.world has a discord server. You could report the mods there.
I’ve messaged a mod on the News channel first to see if they can help, someone suggested to me that this could have even been an automatic moderation (since it was my first comment and it was long maybe?). The mod log is not clear as it’s obfuscated/private. If i still have no luck i’ll try their discord, thanks for the suggestion.
to me this looks more like an automod error or human mistake than actual power tripping. keep us updated on how the appeal goes.
Welcome to Lemmy.world, where the rules are made up on the spot and nothing you say matters as long as it fits the official Democratic Party line.
On that shithole instance, if ya disagree with anything the Democrats do, you get labeled a russian spy quick! lmao
OMG CIVILITY! BANNED FOR VIOLATING RULE 1 !!!
It’s more extreme than Democratic Party line.
If it’s not the Democrat linked powermods from Reddit that control r/news, then they at least draw inspiration from the same behaviors. Though I suspect it’s the same operation controlling the narrative on both.
Every User who isnt on .world is a user fighting for the decentralisation of lemmy
Lmfao, I never thought I’d ever agree with that mod team, if anything, yours is the kind of shit take they usually lap up 😂
I don’t know what the acronym to indicate you’re in the wrong is, but setting up a sock account for the sole purpose of defending a, at very least, nazi defender and profiteer, makes you the asshole (that mod team is too in general, but I can’t fault them for deleting your reply).
YDI is the term you’re looking for. It’s in the sidebar
Thanks, I hadn’t scrolled down far enough.
A sock puppet account is a false account made for deceptive purposes - this is a flat mischaracterization of my account. What would be my deception? I made it clear I’m a proton user of many years, made it clear i’m posting my opinion, made it clear it’s my first post, and quoted from the source instead of going off on an extreme take… like, say, presuming the CEO to be a Nazi defender and profiteer because he posted a single comment to thank Trump for a cabinet appointment. A cabinet appointment btw that has been widely cautiously praised by left-wing progressives. Only ‘cautiously’ because it’s Trump. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/donald-trump-antitrust-agenda-nominees_n_6771d727e4b094f547727973
A broken clock is right twice a day - even Trump sometimes does things that are helpful. Probably by accident or because they align with some other goal he has - but good nonetheless. Go on though, continue the personal attacks for me having a perfectly valid opinion - without researching one of your own.
without researching one of your own.
Lmfao, says the person defending nazi defenders…
But hey, whatever makes you feel better about your shit take,
sockpuppetperson who created a throwaway account solely to defend nazi defenders, which is much worse, but as you please…😂Oh, for fucks sake. Take a hint from the downvotes, the CEO is not a nazi defender, and your neoliberal opinion is shit.
Warning: sock-jacketing it’s against our instance rules
