I can always tell when my wife is on some ad cuz it’s just the idea out of no where with no context. The more distant from social media you get the more you see it influencing others.
Yeah same. My gf just out of nowhere comes and is like look at this cool thing I saw on Instagram.
Sorry darling that ia clearly a sponsored post aka an ad.
My SO comes to me and literally plays the reel then says “WE NEED THIS” or “WE HAVE TO DO THIS”.
It’s also so weird how different people react to it. I roll my eyes the whole time and skip past it, I figured that is what everyone did (except for mbmbam sometimes if they have good jokes during it. I have never even considered trying out one of the products. I always figure those who have to rely on advertising extremely heavily are shit, like Raycons and BetterHelp.
The first ever sour experience I had with MBMBAM was believing them about Nature Box’s snacks. The almonds and shit I got were okay, but definitely not worth the price, and there was some fuckery with the subscription where even though I cancelled it, it still charged me $50, non-refundable. I’ve never trusted a podcast ad since then
FUCK ADS!
Podcast ads can be some of the most acceptable, when it’s the hosts reading about products they might’ve used / didn’t mind using.
If a quick “sub to Audible” is the difference between a Patreon paywall / content unavailable & free listening, well, make it quick pls 😉
sidebar - shoutout styropyro for some ad for a science desk where he lit the one he got free on fire. Sponsorblockers missed a fun segment there (arguably making up for it with less dubious supplement spam of course)
Edit: that might not be the exact video but it’s awesome
Top comment on that video was “happy to see your okay”, and the person who replied to your comment here shared a similar sentiment. Is there reason for this guy’s viewers to worry he might not be okay, or is it just a case of someone not posting for a long time between videos?
Edit: in the first three minutes of that linked video, he says “it’s actually kinda funny that I’m even allowed to own this”. I think I get why people worry now
Edit 2: I also just saw that his previous video outlines illness stuff. I haven’t watched that video, but the top comment was roughly “a scan costing twice as much if you have insurance is criminal”, so I think I get the gist on the shape of illness stress he’s been facing
Yes, poor guy, something like -
YouTuber Drake reveals a complicated and ongoing health situation, starting with unexpectedly high testosterone levels, leading to numerous tests, insurance company disputes, a potential liver disease diagnosis after years of abnormal blood markers, and a temporary redirection of his focus from creating his typical YouTube videos to pursuing personal passions like storm chasing, while assuring fans of his eventual return.
Having watched Styropyro for years, learning that this man simply has too much testosterone was the least surprising illness reveal ever
I understand it sucks to have any illness, but it’s better than like, lymphoma
Sorry Hank
I take it you’ve not seen any of his videos? He plays around with incredibly powerful lasers and electronics etc
I’ve said this since being a kid in the 90s.
There should be a huge collection (I called it a book or catalog at the time because the Internet wasn’t widely available yet) that does all the different companies that do X things or provide Y service (kinda like yellow pages, but with more information than just a phone number) that is filterable in tons of ways (by default, region) and if you need or want anything you just look up who provides it and make your decision by the information available there.
But it should stay contained in that book (or whatever form it takes) and legally not be allowed outside of it. Every other piece of “free” content (podcasts, and people you find interesting) should actually be free.
But capitalism.
"Hey, you should install this app, Honey, it literally gives you free money! ignore all the requests to porn sites its making, and the weird and convuloted blockchain features!.
While you’re at it, get nordvpn, so we can use the internet while encrypted and stop facebook tracking us!
"
“Raid, Shadow Legends”
Since you mention nord vpn… it’s also annoying that content creators seem to think a vpn I’d something that keeps your passwords safe.
They’re almost definitely shilling something they don’t even know what it does.
Okay so I know Lemmy won’t like this but I’m one of those idiots on the free money apps AND also I’m taking steps to privatize other parts of my online presence. I am well aware of the dissonance.
But in my defence, the site I use to make money still works even though I block ads on their games. And I’m broke, yo.
were you not paying attention or have you already forgotten that Honey is scamming the very content creators who shilled it (and others) by hijacking their affiliate links via cookie stuffing? By using Honey you’re actively fucking over people who get income from affiliate marketing.
Ok maybe I didn’t understand the other comment cause I have no idea what Honey is. The site I use is not really advertised (at least I’ve never seen any ads or influencers for it).
Edit: Oh omg lol I thought they were saying honey as like someone talking to their spouse (like in the comic). Reading comprehension is weak. idk wtf that app is.
tbh: I don’t care about other people’s affiliate links - they only sell bs anyway. what would scare me much more, is what they are willing to do to ppl like you and me. if they are willing to fuck around with ‘influencers’, which can have quite a bit of money and reach - to what extent are they ok to fuck around with ppl, that don’t have any money?
they only sell bs anyway
- They don’t always sell BS, many creators link to gear they actually use
- Most sites will attribute a sale to an affiliate link even if you end up buying something else ftom them.
The main concern of yours is legit. Definitely a “too good to be true” situation.
I don’t buy from affiliate links either btw.
It’s one thing to avoid particular marketplaces that have affiliate programs like Amazon, but if you’re going to buy something from them anyway, wouldn’t it be better to go out of your way to use an affiliate link? No affiliate link means giving more money to Amazon. Affiliate link means you can choose someone to get a small piece of the profits.
You are correct, I just don’t really buy stuff from big online marketplaces.
Different honey. Both are scammy.
NordVPN (and every other vpn, honestly) is good for torrents, they even have dedicated torrent nodes. I got a multi-year thing, for under 3 euros a month.
NordVPN is not good for torrents, they don’t support port forwarding
Can you explain how port forwarding is used for torrenting and how it works with other VPNs?
Basically, if you aren’t port forwarded, you will get less peers. This is because you aren’t allowing incoming traffic, so only other port forwarded peers can talk to you. If you are port forwarded, you get all the peers.
With vpns that support port forwarding, you can set the port forwarded port on the VPN to the port in your bittorrent client and it will allow incoming traffic.
Interesting, thanks for answering me. I didn’t know about this.
Stun
How is STUN relevant here?
Edit: I see it can be used for hole punching. However, port forwarding directly is a much more elegant solution I feel
who the f does i gave up

U guys have ads? Isn’t that what adblockers are for?
Vibes from Truman show when his wife starts her mococa product placement during his distress. God the pervasiveness of listening to humans chat about a product really has proven to sell… AI podcast tailored to your preferences that puts their product placement in the best spot after leading you towards a huge need for it… Ye it’s best to start pruning your media right away
Fiction audiobooks only, forever. Except for when reading fiction books.
I remember hearing Burr’s ad the same morning he released the podcast, I was commuting an hour to work thanks to a blizzard the previous day and that dude lifted my spirits that day with this gem and his genuine improvised Monday Morning podcast feeling like he was sitting in my truck next to me complaining the whole time
It’s beautiful when he shits on the copy or even better, wonders out loud why the fuck anyone would use the product.
on spotify i just hit the skip 15 button like 6 times anytime i hear their outro music. then if i hear ads still i hit again until i don’t hear ads.
Antennapod let’s you program the skip buttons up to 60 seconds, which is a delight.
If you’re hearing the outro, why not just go to the next thing?
And if that’s limited because Spotify sucks (I have never used it), then get a podcast app that’s not cancer. You don’t even need a subscription for those (unless they’re exclusive or something, in which case your taste is objectively bad, so have fun dealing with that).
I meant outro as the “going into commercial” bit. Sorry for the confusion, not sure what that’s supposed to be called. When it gets to the end I do move on to the next one.
I’ve never even heard of a commercial outro, but I’m guessing it’s just a podcast version of a TV show doing “well be back after these messages” kind of thing. I don’t know what that’s called either, but I know what you mean now. Thanks for the clarification.
I only listen to 2 podcasts for now. One doesn’t really do any ads (except for mentioning the podcast network they’re a part of, and sometimes the annual convention the network has, but so far nothing commercial I’ve noticed), and the other does have some ad breaks, but there isn’t any warning for when it’s coming. But in that case I’ve developed the 90 second skip strategy too. Or I would, but I do most of my podcasts while driving, so it’s unfortunately not a priority. I have a button on the steering wheel that works, and sometimes I can make use of it, but usually I’m paying attention to the road more than focusing on skipping the ad while making sure not to skip part of the show.
Use pocket casts or antennapod*. Huge qol increase.
Good tip for Spotify folks
OK now not to preach!
A couple people have argued we can avoid consolidating more power in Spotify, who envisions a world of exclusive/proprietary podcasts, by going with other options
Audible is ok, but you have to have restraint. Get you 12 or 24 credits, Make sure none of the books you’re buying are available through overdrive with your library, spend your points, cancel, go through all those books, Read a few on dead trees, or even a few from LibGen, then when it’s all done wait until you can’t wait anymore and sign up for another 12 or 24 credits.
Save your audio books for when you’re driving or cooking or cleaning, Don’t just sit on the couch and listen to them.
And use the tools to rip them immediately. Until you extract mp3 data out of your books they’re not you are books.
instead of giving money to a Bezos/Amazon owned service, you can support services like libro.fm that let you download/own the audiobook mp3 outright.
I spot checked a few things I’m reading, they’re about 20-50% more expensive. It kind of looks like they’re just a new front end for Barnes & Noble, but with worse curation
You can also go directly to the publishers and save a couple of bucks.
I’m down for paying a bit more at a local retail store, or maybe even a few percent on an online store. But I have to pay $47.24 for Dune, I’m probably just going to pirate it.
Understandable. FWIW members (15 USD/month at this time) get a discount and the option to use one of the credits you get each month. So Dune can be had for 14.99. I get the pricey books with credits, others I use the discount for. It’s a bit odd and I don’t love memberships, but I do want to support ownership models where they still exist.
If you share access with friends and family using a self-hosted audiobook server then the value really sky-rockets.
they’re not you are books
…
Sorry I was driving at the time and Google AI is slowly ruining voice dictation. They’re not your books.
Please don’t browse lemmy while you’re driving
Dead stopped in traffic. Phone handsfree hence dictation.
homie. calm down. it’s a dash mark. not a catastrophe.
You had the option of saying it’s an apostrophe not a catastrophe and you didn’t fucking take it
yeh that was my point, sorry it didn’t land
LaVar Burton would like a word.

The only product I’ve ever first heard of via an Internet ad that I tried and was exactly as advertised is my Groove Life belt. This thing is fuckin’ nice and has a lifetime guarantee. I can send it back for a different color if I wanted to, and I’ve had it for a few years now.
Everything else I’ve tried after finding it from ads online has sucked major balls or been basically no better than a cheaper brand.
Yes! My wife was going to leave me and run off with my conventionally attractive neighbour, but then I discovered Groove Life™! I immediately called their toll-free number and ordered a pair of Groove Life™ socks. My life has never been the same since! Once he saw me walking down the street with new-found confidence thanks to my Groove Life™ socks, my neighbour dumped my wife and moved in with me.
My entire family had been skinned alive and I was made to watch it all. I was depressed and about to kill myself. But then I discovered Groove Life™. The first time I put them on, I felt a spiritual presence enter my heart. This presence whispered “Make sure you tell your friends and family that Groove Life™ are now 15% off when purchased with Kohl’s Cash” and I have never felt the same since.
what does it do? can i staple it to myself in different places on different days for different effects?
Mine has +2 Strength, +2 Stamina.
$65 and not even leather? But it’s actually a good belt?
Leather belts falling apart all the time is why I even was wanting to try a different kind of belt in the first place.
lol you’re just buying shitty belts, try and buy some full grain belts from someone who makes them
This reads like an ad
Oh man it’s been a while since I’ve heard sharis berry’s haha
I just fucking died listening to that again.
So it’s not free. The cost is $0, but that is not the same as free.
Think “free” as in “free audiobooks”, not “free speech”
Who are you trying to reply to??
Casper? All my pods talk about helix
Even if it is in jest, that’s a block.
