The “Buy Nothing Project”, a group that started the fad, is asking Facebook to take down groups using their name.

The “project” makes money off buy-nothing exchanges through their app.

Shitty company being shitty, and Facebook facilitating the shit.

What? You don’t want to pay 55 USD per year to access a place where you exchange stuff for free? How selfish /s

Seriously that company is so shitty. Who is this for? People who tend to need the mutual aid don’t have that kind of cash to spend, and those who give away what they don’t use anymore don’t want to pay to give away. It’s at best predatory.

“Mutual aid” is not trademarked and if anyone attempts it I’m going postal.

Caught between sympathizing with a Facebook Group moderator and a scummy trademark enforcer. I hate 2025.

FB and its inevitable relationship with authoritarian governments is the problem.

Just being on Fedi is part of the free-speech (and in this case, -beer) solution.

I was honestly really put off when some old guy nabbed a ton of stuff I had on there so that he could sell it all at his church’s fundraising auctions. Like, I’d rather not throw it away but eww.

He was almost always the first to respond to my posts when I was trying to downsize.

Much of it was all posted in a short period of time. I ignored him after he picked it up and told me what it was for. I’m just always saddened and frustrated that there seem to always be people jumping to take advantage of any situation, be a middle man.

In the long run, it’s again at least better than wasting it. I don’t have the patience to deal with trying to sell most things. It’s not like I went out and bought the stuff with the intent of giving them away to someone who needs it for free. It just… doesn’t feel as rewarding as knowing it is actually going to help someone besides a middle man.

It was good, but I always had a real problem with people not turning up. I think that because it was free, it led some people to think that it didn’t matter if they didn’t pick it up. If you stick it on eBay with a small price, it will be collected.

And this is why I always mark stuff on Facebook Marketplace with like a $5 price tag. I fully intend on giving it away for free, but the small price weeds out all of the people who only sort by “Free” and mass message every single poster.

It has its issues sure. But was overall a great platform. I made some life long friends from it too.

I realize this leaves a bad taste in people’s mouths, but I see this as a company trying to rightfully protect it’s blah blah, and a bunch of groups that kinda bent the rules in a well-intentioned way, and now have to click the Settings button in FB and rename their groups. Yes the company could have done things differently but they didn’t, most companies are internal gong shows and any working human knows that. Ok, do we need to huff and puff about this? Life carries on, and nobody still knows about or uses, or will use, the offical BN app lol
