The second book, Claw of the Conciliator, is the hardest slog with the most confusing ending (but is ultimately rewarding when it ‘clicks’).
However the third book, Sword of the Lictor, is the best in the series. So many of the best moments are in this book, as well as some of the most famous quotes.
For me, the masquerade ball at the Archon’s palace is the “buckle up” moment for the rest of the story.
For a real trip, restart book 1 immediately after finishing book 4: there is so much you will see know that you know what to look for.

I haven’t read any of the long sun books but I feel like I understand that feeling. Fwiw, I first finished all 4 books and was only satisfied with the end of book 3. Thankfully there’s so much meat between those endings that it kept me going.
That disappointment is what made me realize that I must have missed some important details and start an immediate reread.
Once I started over on the first book it was amazing to realize how the clues are just everywhere. I’m reading the exact same words, but this time they’re hitting way harder.
The schadenfreude here is delicious, alas the perils of being such a vehemently player-hostile game publisher 😂
