Why does this look so blatantly fabricated… Is anyone buying that?

Edit: to be clear I don’t doubt Trump posted this, but even just the first line is ridiculous and it doesn’t really improve

I regret to inform you Rutte’s office has confirmed officially. I took massive psychic damage when I discovered this was a real post of a real text not a real post of a fake text.

I can only provide some sample articles that reference a confirmation from Rutte’s office. I don’t think they put out a statement or a release, I think reporters called the office and got confirmation that way. Not sure you’ll be able to find a public statement.

          https://www.france24.com/en/europe/20250624-trump-posts-nato-chief-gushing-message-praise-extraordinary-iran-action-rutte

Here’s a French one that theoretically isn’t bound to gobble Trumps knob.

“Congratulations and thank you for your decisive action in Iran, that was truly extraordinary and something no one else dared to do. It makes us safer,” Rutte wrote in a message shared by Trump on Truth Social – and confirmed by the NATO chief’s office.

Thanks. What a crazy message to sent! But to be fair and after looking a bit further into this, is seems like this is what diplomacy looks like at this point of time. At least towards the USA.

Lol, this is phrased like you’d talk to an angry madman to get him to calm down. Or a child. I’m sure the tone is completely lost on Trump.

Not that I like the message or the person who sent it, but this is very clearly designed to stroke his 3 braincells while signaling to your folks what you really think of him.

Mark Rutte knows exactly what to say to achieve his goals. He’s the diplomatic weasel NATO needs in this current timeline.

This is only acceptable when Rutte somehow knows that Trump is cracy and this keeps him at bay until arrested.

No, I wouldn’t call that diplomacy.

This is why you and I aren’t diplomats.

If the head of NATO is dependent upon the USA for lots of support to NATO, then it is in NATO’s interest for the head of the USA to like NATO. If you know the head of the USA is incredibly shallow and you can achieve that support simply by sending an email/text message which requires zero dollars, and at best, a bit of political capital, then its a good deal for the NATO head to do that.

This is what is both fascinating and horrible about diplomacy and geopolitics. Its not about being “right” or “moral” in the moment. Its about getting what you want hopefully in service of the overall goal of of your interests. Sometimes that overall goal is “right” and “moral” in the case of NATO usually.

Anyone have any better ideas on how to handle the sundowner with a massive ego? Rutte is a smart guy playing the game, as is his job.

Rules:

  • Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:

    • Post news articles only
    • Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
    • Title must match the article headline
    • Not United States Internal News
    • Recent (Past 30 Days)
    • Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
  • Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think “Is this fair use?”, it probably isn’t. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.

  • Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.

  • Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.

  • Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19

  • Rule 5: Keep it civil. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.

Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to “Mom! He’s bugging me!” and “I’m not touching you!” Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.

  • Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.

  • Rule 7: We didn’t USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you’re posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.

We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.
