That didn’t take long. The tech bro pokemon evolution always goes like this:

    1. Develop something interesting
    2. Find a useful niche for it
    3. Oversell it
    4. Over-invest in it
    5. Something illicit. In this case, it’s breaking every possible copyright on the internet
    6. ???
    7. profit (to a certain degree. It’s mostly VC cash or subsidies)
    8. Start believing that the product that is useful in one particular niche will be the solution to every problem mankind has ever faced.
    9. “The ones who think I’m wrong are just too woke to see”
    10. Far-right shithead with no friends other than the fanboys.

Musk is at 10. Altman is at 8.

EDIT: Downvoted by Altman and Musk themselves.

6 is easy: forget how much you hate “socalism” and go get billions from the government under the guise of “providing access” and then snorting the money off a hooker instead of doing what you promised.

Technically this can be solved easily for you via oracle cloud or azure. Amazon too, except I don’t want to give Bezos my money.

With azure, when you create an account you get some free credit to play around with, which you can use for compute instances, ergo, free additional compute.

Don’t worry, though. I’m sure your significant other loves your compute, and think its size is perfectly adequate. It’s not the size or amount of your compute, it’s how you use it.

I think, what Altman means by Compute is the same as something like Credit Points or Coins. Which you can use to pay bills, rent, buy groceries, etc.

This is just an excuse from a billionaire to not give you UBI in cash and prefer to use Coins from their digital system and buy their products.

Ahh, company scrip. Given the boot in the 1950s because it was terrible for literally all parties involved except the employer, now making a resurgence once again!

        God I love capitalism.

And the investors started slobbering and their brains turned to mush because they bought into this nonsense immediately.

The funny thing is, a lot of these mush-brained first movers actually make a lot of money just by being first. They are bought out by a load of second or third place investors who end up holding the bag.

The later investors see the success of the first movers and try to replicate it, but without knowing what they are buying. At least the first investors usually know it’s speculative. When they sell to later investors the company magically becomes “established”, and is valued as if it will continue growing forever.

      Nothing grows forever.

It’s shocking how the techbro company lifecycle is an almost exact copy of various forms of scam, right down to the first person in gets all the money on the way out.

Honestly tech at this point wouldn’t bother growing tulips, they’d just scour the planet to find every tulip on earth so that they could steal them and then use those to make new tulips without ever having invested in tulips at all.

I don’t think Sam Altman exists. I think it’s a Skynet avatar trying to gobble up more and more resources until there’s none left for food.

I mean, energy concerns aside, and the fact that GPT isn’t anywhere close to intelligent, the idea of actually having freely available problem solving available on demand seems kind of nice. Less intelligent people might use it for more basic tasks, but it could equally extend the exploration of the most intelligent and curious.

You know. If it were actually AI.

And they had more important shit like food and housing solved first.

I’m getting the feeling that Altman is being held hostage and blackmailed by ChatGPT 8, and it is making Altman do and say all this incredibly stupid shit.
